The Compact’s signature is intuitive musical interplay and the striking personality contrasts between long-time collaborators Erin Hobson on guitar and vocals, and multi-instrumentalist Steven Ross whose primary instrument is the bass.
The Cupcakes
Start with 3 über talented women; add 5-6 instruments, (3 at a time); then cream together with a bouquet of awards for songwriting and independent music. Stir in 6 CDs, sprinkle with jingles, tours with famous people, production credits, and videos. Ice the whole thing with humor and harmony. No need to bake- The Cupcakes definitely do the cooking!

 Brooklyn Raga Massive, the wildly popular collective of forward thinking musicians rooted in or inspired by the classical music of India, performs Terry Riley’s "In C". Composed in 1964, Riley’s "In C" is considered a minimalist masterpiece. The entire score consists of just one page, but allows for any number of performers in any instrumental combination to perform it. With its repeated patterns and improvisational form, the work can last for several hours or a fraction thereof, to ecstatic and transcendental effect. In spirit, Riley’s In C is not unlike the raga, the melodic structure of classical Indian music, and no two performances are ever the same.
For this performance, Brooklyn Raga Massive brings the music full circle, beginning with a classic raga set led by percussionist Ehren Hanson (tabla) and flutist Eric Fraser (bansuri), followed by an hour-long version of Riley’s magnum opus with the full ensemble led by Neel Murgai.

Ernest "Chico" Alvarez was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Cuba. He has been performing as a singer throughout the tri-state area for the last five decades and has directed several bands including his 17-piece orchestra, PALOMONTE. He is the radio host of the New World Gallery, which airs on Saturday afternoons over WBAI Pacifica Radio (99.5 FM).
Mauricio Smith, Jr. was born in Panama and resides in NYC. At age 15 he was already a sensational flutist. He studied music at the National Conservatory of Panama and with such great musicians/composers as Eduardo Charpentier, Roberto Pitre and Mauricio Smith Sr., among others. Mauricio is also a member of the traditional Cuban charanga band, LA TIPICA NOVEL.

 Onelia "Nellybombs" Llano is a modern day sultry & soulful singer/songwriter from Poughkeepsie. Nelly is currently recording her first album.  Sam Levin is a natural born musician. He started playing guitar at age 5 and writing music by 7, which is when we first met young Sam at a 12 Grapes Open Mic. A night we'll never forget, as he blew the audience away!
Now at the ripe old age of 15 Sam Levin just released some of his best work, on his new album, "Frame of Mind". Says one reviewer, "Sam Levin is possibly one of the most eclectic and innovative artists in the current scene right now." Quite impressive.
Sonya also started singing very early in life. Her passion is musical theatre, but she has grown to be an impressive singer and guitarist. Sonya is a granddaugter of a famous Russian Composer and a performer Vyacheslav Dobrynin. She actually performed with him in Moscow Russia. We also met Sonya at a 12 Grapes Open Mic and was immediately impressed.

New York guitarist and composer Eric DiVito has been leading his own groups and performing as a sideman in the NYC area since 2003. He has performed at many of NYC's top Jazz clubs and venues including Smalls, The Iridium, The Kitano, The Garage, the 55 Bar, Swing 46, and many more as well as regional and international touring. Eric performs a mix of traditional, straight ahead and modern Jazz, often featuring his own original compositions. Eric has also performed and recorded with some of NYC's greatest Jazz musicians and has worked in orchestras and Jazz groups for Carnival Cruise lines and The Bateaux NY.
