Royal Khaoz’s music is reminiscent of reggae's old school sounds with a modern interpretation. The band stands as a unit whose sole purpose is to bring an energetic vibe through music. Lisa Gutkin, best known as violinist and vocalist for the Grammy-winning Klezmatics, for "Gonna Get Through This World" that she co-wrote with Woody Guthrie, and for her work with Sting in "The Last Ship," has recently released "From Here On In," a CD of original songs and is a co-composer of, and on stage musician in "Indecent," a new play about Sholem Asch's "God of Vengeance" by Paula Vogel, which opens on Broadway in April 2017NYFA grant recipient Fred Gillen Jr has released 9 full-length albums, to great critical acclaim. His songs have been featured on ABC's "All My Children," NPR's "Car Talk," CMJ's New Music Marathon Sampler, and in 2012 his version of Woody Guthrie's "I Ain't Got No Home" was featured on "Pete Remembers Woody". Like Guthrie, his songs often shine a light on the struggles, despair and hope in the human condition. Orlando Marin, a contemporary of such greats as Tito Puente, Machito, and Tito Rodriguez, is the only orchestra leader from New York’s golden era of mambo who still performs regularly.
Orlando formed his first band, Eddie Palmieri and his Orchestra and, since then, has played with several different bands and has performed in the famous Palladium Ballroom. In 1997, Latin music historiographer Max Salazar presented Orlando a plaque in recognition of nearly five decades of uninterrupted contribution to Latin music. In January 2003, Orlando was invited by Latin Jazz station, WPFW, by the Arlington County (Virginia) Cultural Arts Division, and by the Latin American Folk Institute to do a live concert in Washington at The Spectrum Theater and in 2006, Congressman Jose E. Serrano honored Orlando as “The Last Mambo King,” for his continuing to provide Latin American music and his willingness to devote time to helping the less fortunate. Admission $15 | ||
