IMPROV CUBED: FROM BACH TO THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
with André Mehmari, Tanya Gabrielian, Chris Pattishall
Jazz
Fisher Center, LUMA Theater
60 Manor Avenue
Annandale-on-Hudson, NY   See Map
Experience the secret past of improvisation from Bach to the Great American Songbook as classical pianist Tanya Gabrielian and jazz pianist Chris Pattishall join virtuoso André Mehmari on double piano in a musical journey spanning 300 years and layered with masterful improvisations.

History's best composers were expected to churn out improvisational masterpieces with regularity, so why are our associations with improvisation so deeply tied to jazz, yet so little to the classic musical past? In this special concert, three pianists recreate the rich and hidden history of improvisation with variations on works by Bach, Scarlatti, Schubert, and music from ragtime, Brazilian choro, and the Great American Songbook.

When O’Leary launched his own band in 2008 and invited her to join, she jumped at the chance. Of McCarthy, O'Leary has said, "she's my favorite person in the world to sing with."

McCarthy’s vocals are powerful and soulful and her band plays a mix of blues, funk, R&B and rock—including original and cover material—and features Pete Hop on guitar, Scott Milici on keys, Doug Abramson on bass and Jerry Teters on drums.

Singer Songwriter - Mike Herz
Folk/Traditional
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Raised in rural Northwest, New Jersey, Mike grew up amongst fertile farmlands and majestic mountains. So, naturally, as a teenager his music of choice was rap. Why you ask? The words. There was passion and poetry there, and it resonated. Some years later Mike discovered the songs of Bob Dylan, and after listening to those words his heart clinically stopped for 2 minutes. With the understanding that simply a guitar and words could alter the universe, folk music hit home. So words were written, chords were learned and songs were born. Songs sung in a deep voice that rattle around in your head long after the music ends. Songs that make you think but don't trip you up and leave you realizing something you already knew.

No cover. Donations to the musician is greatly appreciated and encouraged.

Featuring -- Cameron Brown (Bass) and Jay Azzolina (Guitar) !!

“Jordan and Clayton were clearly having a blast as two women who know exactly what they want to wring out of every song they do.”

“You hear lots of jazz instrumentalists having musical conversations, but rarely do you get a chance to hear two inventive vocalists having those conversations on stage.” - Brent Hollenbeck / Burlington Jazz Festival

“Clayton in her tone poem, Jordan in her slung-low jazz, the bassist and the guitarist held the audience so tightly that the air was stilled.”

“If the “aim of waking is to dream”, as e e cummings wrote, then this evening was the sweetest of dreams.” - Paloma Capana / Rochester International Jazz Festival

For decades, Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton have been challenging convention and creating daring new expressions in jazz. They team up to take listeners on a musical adventure of scat, ballad, sung poetry, improvised lyrics and more.

This annual candle-lite “service of the shadows” recreates the last days of Jesus’ life, leading up to his crucifixion on the cross. The progress is marked by the dimming of lights until, with the removal of the Christ Candle, we are reminded of the final isolation of Jesus in darkness on the cross. The bell tolls 33 times, for the years of Christ’s life. The Christ Candle’s return symbolizes the meaning of the cross fulfilled. The retelling is done with a series of dramatic scenes interspersed with music.

SlideAttack is a modern incarnation of the group led by the great J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, co-led by two NY veteran trombonists, Alan Goidel and Howard Levy. SlideAttack plays fresh arrangements of jazz standards from the swing era to hard bop and beyond, by composers Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson, George Gershwin, Hank Mobley and others, along with original material.

"In so many ways, this music is so refreshing; excellent arrangements, interesting repertoire, all put together with the care and love that can only come from true dedication and appreciation for the kind of swinging jazz that one doesn't hear nearly enough nowadays. In the great tradition of the two-trombone groups of yesteryear, Mr. Levy and Mr. Goidel deserve our gratitude for keeping the tradition not only alive, but swinging!" - Loren Schoenberg, Artistic Director, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem

Sarah Craig the Executive Director of Caffe Lena has asked Brian Melick, aka Uduboy, to present "An Evening with a Percussionist" to feature a wide variety of both conventional as well as unconventional percussion instruments that he has performed with over the last 3 decades of concerts at the Caffe. The evening will be filled with energy and music and will highlight Audience Participation.

I have asked a very special friend, Studio Stu, to join me at times throughout the evening as well as a few featured solo's himself...this will be Studio's first opportunity to perform at the Caffe.

Studio is an amazingly creative artist that has refined the Single String Bass to be a three and a half octave instrument. Fun loving, quick witted and totally engaging, I couldn't imagine doing this performance without having him join me.

I hope to see you all there...ya know what I'm sayin?
