4 Main Street
Hyde Park, NY   See Map
Helen Avakian is the newly crowned International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion. Since 1979, only 2 women have won this prestigious contest held in Winfield, KS. The other is the great Muriel Anderson. Both ladies joined for a show here in Hyde Park only 6 months ago, and each received a well deserved standing ovation from a standing room only sell-out crowd. Helen and Muriel reunite Dec 13 in Kent, OH for the Woodchoppers Ball, an annual benefit for the homeless billed as "9 of the greatest guitarists in the world".

After the Ball, Helen travels briefly to the Hudson Valley for the release of her new CD, "Notes from Helen". This is her first all guitar instrumental CD, featuring the types of songs that just won her a world championship. Fans of Helen's wonderful vocals and songwriting will not be disappointed, however. We'll still hear her great classics as "I Love The Moon" and "Mistletoe Blues" and more!

"Zwas the Night before Zmas"
with Ed Palermo Big Band
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. His Big Band may deliver Zappa, Hendrix, Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield, Todd Rundgren or one of Ed’s own compositions, with lush turns and twists.

The legendary Gil Evans states: “I first heard Ed Palermo’s music in a small club in the SoHo section of Manhattan. He was using the instrumentation of a traditional big band yet his arrangements and songs were anything but that. When I thought the music was going a certain direction, it would suddenly turn a corner. Ed has the ability to keep that important balance between cohesiveness and unpredictability. Ed Palermo’s music is alive and represents now.”

The latest release, 'Oh No! Not Jazz!!' consists of two albums - the first explores Ed's distinctive interpretations of Frank Zappa's work and works from original Mothers Of Invention. The second album features Ed's own riotous, colorful compositions.

Ever since I have been little I have wanted to help people and bring more kindness into the world. I am now a junior at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and I still want the same thing. When I was a little girl I almost lost my best friend to childhood leukemia. I would have to say that, that is something that has truly shaped and defined my life, and NOT in a negative way. It has made me realize how precious life is and how grateful we must be for every minute. It also pushed me to think of how I could help other children who are fighting cancer. Last summer I started Jess's Hope which is a small operation in which I make crafts and cards and other presents for the home. The profit goes to helping children with cancer. However, I wanted to do something bigger, so I will be fulfilling that dream by hosting a Holiday Benefit Concert with all proceeds going to help do something nice at this time of year for children with cancer. There will be a silent auction & baked goods!

Rebecca Martin has recorded a number of fine albums, most notably with jazz drummer Paul Motian. Ms. Martin accompanies herself on acoustic guitar and enlists top-flight musicians. Applying Motian's less-is-more ethic with her album "The Growing Season", created an enthusiastic response!

"...warm, unguarded voice, an instrument of modesty and forbearance..." - The New York Times

The album's success led to Best Folk/Singer-Songwriter Album at the Independent Music Awards and to headlining shows at the Village Vanguard NYC, making Martin the first singer-songwriter to perform at the jazz club in more than 30 years.

Rebecca's subsequent recordings have been released to critical acclaim, as has her collaboration, Tillery, with singer/songwriters Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens.

Rebecca has been a big part of the evolution of the Falcon. It is always an honor to have her in the house.
