Dan Strauss
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter, and Blues
Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe
40 West Market Street
Red Hook, NY   See Map
Dan Strauss has become a favorite NYC and Hudson Valley singer-songwriter with an intimate vocal style. His music could be described as indie-folk, country, pop or rock, evoking all the styles he grew up on, from the melodic hooks of the Beatles and Elvis Costello to the warmth of James Taylor and Nick Drake to the storytelling style of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Finding songwriting inspiration from contemporary artists like Wilco, Feist and The Shins, Dan writes openly and expressively about life, love and occasionally, his own musical instruments. Dan plays regularly, alone with his bluegrassy band. He has independently released three CD's, "Renting Happiness", "Rocking Chair"and "Circles".

With The Brooklyn Travelin' String Band, Dan explores traditional American music with an urban twist.

Soñando
Latin
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The hot Latin sounds of Soñando have earned them the reputation as the Hudson Valley's premier Latin band. This spicy blend of music and musicians have performed in clubs, at private functions, community festivals, benefit concerts, on radio and television, as well as the Puerto Rico Day Parade in NYC, but the band is at home wherever a dance floor can be cleared. Fueled by a fiery rhythm section and high-octane horns, Soñando plays a wide variety of Latin styles from Plena and Son to Salsa and Merengue!

"The name of the band is Spanish for "dreaming" but when the hordes come out for Soñando, they don't sleepwalk-they dance. And we're not talking a few perfunctory head-bobs or butt-wiggles, they dance until they go up in flames like, Tula's unquenchable bedroom in the Cuban lyrics above." -Woodstock Times

Peekskill, NY   See Map
Saxophonist-composer Adam Larson began playing saxophone at the age of 11. Described by critic Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune as "a player for whom the word 'prodigious' was coined", and by Peter Hum of the Ottaw Citizen as "a saxophonist who brings Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner to mind", Larson has garnered numerous awards. As the leader of his own quintet, Larson recently released his debut album "Simple Beauty". The quintet has performed at the Jazz Gallery, the Blue Note, Smalls, Cornelia St Café, the Kitano, JALC, and serveral others.

Larson's quartet similarly includes those deeply invested in the music and his vision: pianist Can Olgun, bassist Raviv Markovitz;and drummer Guilhem Flouzat. "I want my music to connect with as many people as I can. I’m hopeful that the music on this album will have a little something for everyone."

McCarthy started at the bottom of the blues totem pole and worked her way up the ranks of the Hudson Valley blues scene.

She met acclaimed vocalist Chris O’Leary, who spent six years as the lead singer for Levon Helm's band the Barn Burners. When the Chris O’Leary Band launched in 2008 and members invited her to join the band, she jumped at the chance. “When I’m on stage or in the studio with these guys, I feel a bit like a kid who has stowed away on a trip to Disneyland,” she says.

Willa performs today with a new ensemble - Scott Milici, (keys, organ and piano), Doug Abramson, (bass), Jerry Teters, (drums).

Jazz. Acoustic-Indie
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Saxophonist, songwriter, singer, bandleader and educator, Jesse Scheinin’s sound is anchored in instrumental jazz , but reaches across genres to the acoustic-indie sound. He’s sewn jazz into the lining of his music in "Fall Asleep" (EP). The title song is a lullaby backed by a nine-piece band with five saxophones!

''There are a lot of talented kids out there, but there’s something special about [Jesse] that goes beyond what he’s playing on the saxophone,” - Tenor sax man Joshua Redman

He is the leader of the band Jesse and Forever. Part David Bowie, part Coltrane Quartet, they play new music. A Forever concert is theatrical, surreal and exuberant. Their debut record will be released on New Cull Records. He called on friends from around the globe, all of whom he had met at Berklee College of Music, to form the Forever Band.

At the Falcon, he'll be joined by drummer Vishal Nayak and pianist/organist Jake Sherman.

Blues. Rockabilly
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The Chris O'Leary Band's music is rooted in the blues with shades of New Orleans, rockabilly and big, high-energy sound. Levon Helm can be heard in Chris's early sessions, and sitting in with regular gigs. Soon, Levon asked Chris to join the house band at his new club in New Orleans. Chris’s band relocated and became the focal point of Levon Helm's Barn Burners, backing up touring stars and opening for New Orleans' finest players.

Chris continued to tour with the Barn Burners and in 2007, formed a new band, including fellow Barn Burner Frankie Ingrao on bass, guitarist Chris Vitarello (already known from his tasty, incendiary work with the Bruce Katz Band), and drummer Sean McCarthy. O'Leary's band was a big hit at The Falcon’s first New Year's Eve Celebration, and continues to impress our music savvy crowd.

He has been chosen for the line-up at the 2013 King Biscuit Blues Festival, one of the biggest in the country.
