Middletown, NY   See Map
Skip a meal. Change the world. He was only four years old but Jean Elie influenced many who met him and with your help, his influence can continue. On Saturday June 1st from 11am to 3pm, I am Jean Elie, will hold a kick-off event at the Twin Towers Middle School Track in Middletown NY. Who was Jean Elie? A four year old boy who spent his days like any other, coloring pictures and eating spaghetti for lunch with his friends at school. What stands out about this boy is that instead of enjoying snack time and eating what was provided for him by The Heart School in Haiti, Jean Elie chose to sneak it home in his back pack to share it with his starving family. His selfless act may have gone unnoticed except that Jean Elie's selflessness resulted in his death due to malnutrition.

with Ed Palermo Big Band
Rock, Blues, Big Band, Original Compositions
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. After all, when most people think of “big bands” they think of Duke and Dorsey. But go to see Ed Palermo’s Big Band and you might hear Zappa, Hendrix, the blues of Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, loaded with lush turns and unexpected twists.

Ed’s interpretation of the music of iconoclastic composer Frank Zappa has brought him wide recognition. His first CD of this material, “the ed palermo big band plays the music of frank zappa”, garnered rave reviews. Downbeat magazine gave the CD a 4-star review. Palermo’s second CD of Zappa material, entitled “Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance”, has been received with equal enthusiasm from publications all over the world, including another rave from Downbeat.

World. Afrobeat, Funk, Soul
The Purple Crayon
52 Main Street
Hastings on Hudson, NY   See Map
Inspired by Fela Kuti and how he used his music as an escape from and confrontation against the Nigerian authorities, EMEFE uses its music to fight the inner authorities that we put on ourselves, each for our own specific reasons (hence the band's motto, Music Frees All). With the EMEFE sound, which consists of a four-piece horn section, a drumer, a bassist, two guitarists, two percussionists and a keyboardist, the bands hopes to spread awareness of the healing power of music, dancing, and smiling. Dubbed "one of the Big Apple's best live acts," EMEFE mixes Afrobeat with funk, soul, and rock influences.

EMEFE has played such venues as Le Poisson Rouge, Joe's Pub, Gramercy Theater, Highline Ballroom, and has headlined at NYC's Blue Note jazz festival. Come ready to dance when they bring their energy and talents to The Purple Crayon!

Both traditional and trailblazing...Highly recommended. ***Blues Review Magazine***

Baum's playing has a deep funk to it, with a big influence of Jimmy Smith. And Baum also brings in all kinds of other things as well - dissonant jazz, alternative rock, R&B. He's not too far off from what John Medeski does with Medeski, Martin and Wood, but with more of a blues streak to it. ***Jim Trageser. Escondido, Calif. ***

Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter/pianist -- one of the first. Her groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock and jazz. She was one of the most covered artists in the 1960s & 1970s (Eli's Coming, Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues, Sweet Blindness). She tragically passed in 1997. Finally, in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. In their new show, "Spero Plays Nyro," The Christine Spero Group will bring their own kind of power to Laura Nyro's music. Their arrangements with improvisation mixed with Laura's original arrangements have preserved the integrity of her music. Christine was the winner of the USA Songwriting Competition in the Jazz Category with her song, "He Wasn't Always That Way." Her music is now listened to around the world. Joining Christine will be saxophonist/percussionist Elliot Spero, bassist Scott Petito and drummer Peter O'Brien. The group will also be performing some of Christine's original songs.
