Anker
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe
40 West Market Street
Red Hook, NY   See Map
Anker is a solo acoustic singer/ songwriter raised in Upstate NY but now residing in central NJ. Even though his teenage years were in the 90’s, the music of the Woodstock era and modern acoustic rock can be found in the stories of Anker’s songs.

Anker's self-produced debut CD “Deliver Down” was released world wide on August 7, 2012 to all digital music retailers. "Deliver Down" is the organic middle ground between solo-acoustic and a full band. Anker layers his acoustic guitar, a ukulele (and a bass on some tracks) to bring out the hooks and infectious melodies. This album gives Anker the chance to explore his songs and present them with more detail and fuller arrangements without getting lost in the noise of a band which would take away the charm of his acoustic roots.

Dave Alvin, Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and self-described "barroom guitarist," is widely considered to be one of the pivotal founders of the current Americana music scene. A fourth generation Californian, Dave Alvin grew up in Downey, California as the local landscape quickly evolved from orange groves and dairy farms to tract homes and freeways. He went on to found The Blasters with his brother, Phil, a group he left to go on to other bands including "X" and The Knitters, record solo projects such as King Of California, and to head project groups such as The Guilty Men and The Guilty Women. As Dave says with sly chuckle, "My songs are not necessarily true, but they're all autobiographical."

The Things That Make Us Sing
with Jennie Litt & David Alpher
Cabaret
Lumberland Town Hall
1054 Proctor Road
Glen Spey, NY   See Map
The Town of Lumberland Cultural Series present husband-and-wife cabaret songwriting duo Jennie Litt and David Alpher in The Things That Make Us Sing, a collection of original Alpher/Litt cabaret songs – which, if not quite classics yet, may surely be dubbed "pre-classics" – tackling topics as diverse as the life-cycle of apples, women's lingerie, and gym addiction. David's sophisticated, tuneful, humorous music embraces styles from jazz to blues and beyond. The songs are strung together by our usual lame attempt at patter, which means that whether you're laughing with us or at us, we can nevertheless guarantee that you'll be laughing. Spiced with great works from The American Songbook, Litt and Alpher present a tuneful, timeless afternoon of cabaret. $10/adults, $5/children. For tickets and information, call (845) 856-6372.

The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The song-writing team of Erin Hobson and Steven Ross churn out songs that surprise. This one-of-a-kind ensemble weaves tapestries of musical fare with unexpected depth and sensitivity. The duet’s live show is uplifting and textured - combining musical styles into a sound that’s totally new.

Erin Hobson (guitar/vocals) has performed nationally, opening for Blue Oyster Cult, Hoobastank, The Bret Michael Band, Dave Mason and Jakob Dylan. She is known for her poetic lyrics, masterful guitar technique and unique vocal quality is intimate while her guitar virtuosity and explosive phrasing is anything but soft. The combination often startles.

Steven W. Ross (bass/production) Multi-instrumentalist; Ross has scored and played for radio, TV and film, including two original songs in the 2010 Sundance award-winning mock rockumentary “Colin Fitz Lives!” Steven’s arrangements and “never sag, never brag” bass lines are inventive, unique melodic grooves that define The Compact’s sound.

They unfold in finely crafted songs, accented by an unchained, yet clear and galloping style of folk flat-picking. His latest album, “Wandering Time” marked a new chapter in his own story, as it was recorded in a glorious sounding 19th century victorian home, with a Kickstarter campaign funding the pressing of the album on vinyl. Tristan has had the pleasure of opening for acts ranging from Livingston Taylor, to Side One Dummy Records artist Audra Mae, and nationals Larry & His Flask, among many others all over the east coast, in addition to two solo tours spanning from New York to New Orleans.

Led by drummer Greg Westhoff (The Westchester Swing Band) the band features our very own crooner, Joe Carpentieri. With John Hahn on trombone, John Carriddi on guitar, Dan Denerstein on keyboard, and Ken Zaback on sax/flute.

The GRAND SLAMBOVIANS, "Farewell to Pawling concert"
Rock (modern)
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
The Grand Slambovians (formerly Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams) have been called "the hillbilly Pink Floyd," which is an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Incredible String Band, Neil Young, The Band, Dylan and maybe even some Frank Zappa as well -- a clear indicator of its singularly indescribable uniqueness. At the same time, their sound and even their songs feel so familiar, so classic, it's as if you've been listening to these characters all your life. Upon returning recently from the U.K. this fall where they spread their contagious brand of quirky Americana from Glasgow to Penzance, the band completed work on their fourth studio album, The Grand Slambovians. The advent of The Grand Slambovians is both the band's latest reincarnation and the title of their new, soul stirring album.

Over the past eight years, singer/songwriter Eleanor Kleiner and French bassist Elie Brangbour have traveled the world on an adventure that began when the two met at music school in London. Full of imagery and stories of the human condition, The Whispering Tree’s songwriting is the backbone of their sound and has been heavily influenced by their travels abroad, which have taken them from South America to China. Keyboard Magazine said The Whispering Tree "tastily combines wistful folk, mellow rock, and pinches of gypsy jazz and bluegrass into a compelling compilation of tightly written tunes" and Deli Magazine deemed them "one of the most talented duos to take stage in NYC."

Drew Bordeaux's original tunes weave classic Rock and Blues with today's Pop and Alternative styles to create music that is rich, moving, and relentlessly catchy. NY music reviewer Kevin Johnston wrote, "His guitar work is the real deal... A lot of players have forgotten what the rock solo is for, but Drew knows and he uses it to take the music to a new level. And just to make sure you stay interested, he switches to electric violin."

Join us tonight and every Wednesday for "Burgers & Bordeaux".

SEXMOB Plays FELLINI !

Sexmob 17 years strong, Sexmob is a venerable New York City music institution. The band's four founding members—Steven Bernstein, Briggan Krauss, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wolleson—defy genre, instead replacing it with their own inimitable musical language. It's fitting then that for their first new album in over seven years, Sexmob would choose to re-imagine the music of Nino Rota. It was Rota's imaginative compositions that set the tone for the surrealist films of the legendary director Federico Fellini. The Italian filmmaker once said, "My films, like my life, are summed up in circus, spaghetti, sex, and cinema." And thus accordingly Sexmob dubs their latest 'Cinema, Circus & Spaghetti (Sexmob Plays Fellini: The Music Of Nino Rota).'

They dive headlong into Rota's iconic Fellini film melodies. These classic themes are the perfect foil for Sexmob's improvisational psychedelia, old world beauty and hypnotic groove.

Jazz
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Conceived on Paris’s cosmopolitan jazz scene, forged on the road in America, and informed by international currents in electronic music, The Kandinsky Effect is a jazz power trio for the 21st century. The trans-Atlantic band, based in New York City and Paris, makes its Cuneiform debut with Synesthesia, a roller-coaster ride of an album marked by fierce grooves, subtle electronic textures, intricate metrical shifts, and a commitment to empathic group interplay.

Featuring Warren Walker on saxophone and electronics, bassist Gaël Petrina, and drummer Caleb Dolister, The Kandinsky Effect explores a distinctive swath of sonic territory, inspired by similarly electronica-laced ensembles like Kneebody and Jaga Jazzist. With a long history as a cutting edge format, the saxophone, bass and drums trio is usually employed by horn players looking to explore harmonically unfettered improvisation. The Kandinsky Effect finds a different kind of freedom in the lack of a chordal instrument.

Larry Kolker's songs emerge from American roots music but have a postmodern edge. Crossing folk, blues, pop, rock, soul, and jam-band, harmonized by his distinctive voice, his music has been called "urban country east-coast white-boy blues". A versatile guitar player and in demand on the blues harp, Larry has performed throughout the Northeast, the 2012 Montauk Music Festival, the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, and the Bob Dylan Festival at the Warwick Valley Winery. He is active in the Tribes Hill musical community.

Larry's new 10-song CD, Awful Smart Man, was released in July 2012. He and Fred Gillen Jr. co-produced the album at Woody's House studio. The album reflects a journey of love, agony, discovery, acceptance and joy. It is receiving regular play on WIOX 91.3 FM.
