A unique Blues Duo!
with Rene Carlson on Blues harp, with special guest guitarist, Geoff Hartwell
Blues, Bluegrass
12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Rene Carlson is a rare gem -- a woman of formidable talent on an instrument traditionally dominated by men. Whether grinding out gut-bucket Blues, coaxing the sweetness from old-time Country, delivering high-energy Rock, or playing lightning-speed Bluegrass, she is one of the very few harmonica players equally adept at almost any genre. Rene's honeyed tones and soulful sound have been admired by national harp pros like Phil Wiggins, Curtis Salgado and Annie Raines. Renee has played NYC venues like B.B. King's and Terra Blues, and has shared the stage with Guy Davis, the Campbell Brothers, Debbie Davies, and others.

Renee's unmistakable harp is in high demand among Westchester musicians, but for this engagement she is letting the harp take center stage, supported by Geoff Hartwell, an extraordinary slide guitarist, songwriter and singer in his own right.

Join us for this very special night of Blues.

Marc plays a finger style blues in the traditions of Mississippi Hurt and the great Tim Hardin. He has performed and recorded with Art Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Richie Haven, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson to name a few. He was named Folk Artist of the Year on ABC Radio’s Fame Games. Marc's 'No Fracking Way', recorded with John Sebastian, Eric Weissberg and a hundred Woodstock, NY citizens has become a worldwide anthem for the movement.

Traum first appeared on record at a historic session in 1962 when folk musicians Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger, Peter LaFarge and The Freedom Singers, gathered in the studio at Folkways Records to record an album called Broadside Ballads, Vol. 1. Happy was invited to participate in a famous session with Dylan and poet Allen Ginsberg, which resulted in the box set Holy Soul Jelly Roll.

Perhaps Happy's most important and lasting musical contribution has been Homespun Tapes, which he and his wife, Jane, co-founded in 1967.

On Saturday June 1st from 11am to 3pm, I am Jean Elie, will hold a kick-off event at the Twin Towers Middle School Track in Middletown NY. Who was Jean Elie? A four year old boy who spent his days like any other, coloring pictures and eating spaghetti for lunch with his friends at school. What stands out about this boy is that instead of enjoying snack time and eating what was provided for him by The Heart School in Haiti, Jean Elie chose to sneak it home in his back pack to share it with his starving family. His selfless act may have gone unnoticed except that Jean Elie's selflessness resulted in his death due to malnutrition.

Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. After all, when most people think of “big bands” they think of Duke and Dorsey. But go to see Ed Palermo’s Big Band and you might hear Zappa, Hendrix, the blues of Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, loaded with lush turns and unexpected twists.

Ed’s interpretation of the music of iconoclastic composer Frank Zappa has brought him wide recognition. His first CD of this material, “the ed palermo big band plays the music of frank zappa”, garnered rave reviews. Downbeat magazine gave the CD a 4-star review. Palermo’s second CD of Zappa material, entitled “Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance”, has been received with equal enthusiasm from publications all over the world, including another rave from Downbeat.

EMEFE
World. Afrobeat, Funk, Soul
The Purple Crayon
52 Main Street
Hastings on Hudson, NY   See Map
Inspired by Fela Kuti and how he used his music as an escape from and confrontation against the Nigerian authorities, EMEFE uses its music to fight the inner authorities that we put on ourselves, each for our own specific reasons (hence the band's motto, Music Frees All). With the EMEFE sound, which consists of a four-piece horn section, a drumer, a bassist, two guitarists, two percussionists and a keyboardist, the bands hopes to spread awareness of the healing power of music, dancing, and smiling. Dubbed "one of the Big Apple's best live acts," EMEFE mixes Afrobeat with funk, soul, and rock influences.

EMEFE has played such venues as Le Poisson Rouge, Joe's Pub, Gramercy Theater, Highline Ballroom, and has headlined at NYC's Blue Note jazz festival. Come ready to dance when they bring their energy and talents to The Purple Crayon!

Both traditional and trailblazing...Highly recommended. ***Blues Review Magazine***

Baum's playing has a deep funk to it, with a big influence of Jimmy Smith. And Baum also brings in all kinds of other things as well - dissonant jazz, alternative rock, R&B. He's not too far off from what John Medeski does with Medeski, Martin and Wood, but with more of a blues streak to it. ***Jim Trageser. Escondido, Calif. ***

Daimon and Steve have performed together for many years, beginning in the Christian Rock group KINGDON back in the mid 90's. Having opened for Guardian, as well as headlining several shows, the duo decided to take a break from rock music to pursue a more mellow musical path. Mark performed with Daimon many years ago while the two were in high school and are very excited to be reunited for the next chapter in their musical journey! Stripping their favorite songs down to their original inspiration, the trio now performs all acoustic music including classic hits and original compositions.

Jessi's influences range from Johnny Cash to Ingrid Michaelson.

Kristina has been performing since the age of 8. Now, at 18, Kristina attends the Hartt School of Music for Jazz vocal performance. She is already making a name for herself at clubs in and around the Hudson Valley, at charity events and local concerts. Kristina even performed at the world-famous Apollo Theatre last September.
