Free Klezmer on the streets of Hudson!
with Anastasia and the Bard Klezmer Ensemble
Dance, Folk/Traditional, and World
Musica
17 N 4th St
Hudson, NY   See Map
So then.......The Bard Klezmer Ensemble will play May 15 Wednesday afternoon on the Patio @ Musica at 17 N 4th St. Hudson NY around 6 PM. I say around because we actually have to run down to Bard College and fetch them.

By the way - they make great music - it is engaging and often joyful - the musicians draw from their Eastern European origins while combining a number of unorthodox methods and instruments. The performance I attended included the bass clarinet, dumbek, trombone, guitar, banjo, cello and melodica as well as the more traditional balalaika, violin and clarinet.

This is going to be fun. You can get some food at the Hudson Food Court which is less than a block away. There will be room for dancing. It is free - you don't have to pay anything but you'll probably want to because they will improve your general mindfulness and wellfullnes.

Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter/pianist -- one of the first. Her groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock and jazz. She was one of the most covered artists in the 1960s & 1970s (Eli's Coming, Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues, Sweet Blindness). She tragically passed in 1997. Finally, in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. In their new show, "Spero Plays Nyro," The Christine Spero Group will bring their own kind of power to Laura Nyro's music. Their arrangements with improvisation mixed with Laura's original arrangements have preserved the integrity of her music. Christine was the winner of the USA Songwriting Competition in the Jazz Category with her song, "He Wasn't Always That Way." Her music is now listened to around the world. Joining Christine on piano and vocal will be saxophonist/percussionist Elliot Spero, bassist Scott Petito and drummer Peter O'Brien.

Well, we're excited!

Join us tonight for a tribute to "The Piano Man"... the one and only Billy Joel. "Songs in the Attic" was conceived by Long Island veteran singer/piano player David Clark. David put the band together in 2011, with a tremendous amount of detail and affection for the material. David's stunningly accurate piano playing and lead vocals--combined with a dynamic and high-energy band--has been astounding audiences ever since. And we can't wait to hear them on our stage.

Towne Crier Cafe

Pawling, NY   See Map
For the past three years, this Caravan Of Thieves has roamed the North American continent recruiting a family of avid thrill seekers at their high energy shows. Driving gypsy jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass and violin lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories. It's theatrical and humorous. It's musical and intense. It entertains, dazzles and defies classification while welcoming the spectator to join the band throughout the performance in momentary fits of claps, snaps and sing-alongs. If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton's house, Caravan of Thieves would be the band they hired.

Known for both his virtuosity and spirit of emotional abandon, Jacobs-Strain's live show moves from humorous, subversive blues, to delicate balladry before swinging back to swampy rock and roll.

It's no surprise. Chris O'Leary is one of the Hudson Valley's hottest Blues harp players, and his band is made up of seasoned Blues musicians, including "scorching" blues guitarist Chris Vitarello, Jay Devlin on drums, Willa McCarthy on vocals, Frankie Ingrao on bass, and Andy Stahl and Chris DiFrancesco on sax.

Chris O'Leary was the lead singer and front man for Levon Helm for over 7 years, and has performed with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmy Vivino, Dave Maxwell and many others. If you love great Blues, don't miss this night!

My primary instrument is my voice, and my guitar embellishes, accompanies, and decorates it. My sound and style are my own. Exposure to music and vocal styles of all types, ranging from standards to jazz to folk/traditional to blues, and to the music of Great Britain, the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, have influenced my sound and led me to describe my music as "eclectic acoustic." I have opened for Christine Lavin and Dave Cousins and performed in Showcases and the Open Mic Finals at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY, and appeared in venues in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT. I perform a good mix of songs, including my own compositions, covers, and traditional music. I like to tell the stories of the traditional songs I sing and might focus on the song's provenance, themes, imagery, history, depiction of characters, etc. Listeners tell me that they enjoy learning about this traditional music.

After her first release for EMI: “Sola Contigo” (Alone with You), and her two subsequent releases for Universal Jazz Spain: “Como Agua Entre los Dedos” (Like Water Between the Fingers), and “El Mar de mi Vida” (The Sea of My Life), Eva Cortés ranks among the young and most interesting composers and performers of the jazz scene in Spanish.

“Back 2 The Source” is Eva’s personal look at the essence of what she considers to be the mainstay of her musical influence: Jazz. It is an album packed with best-known standards, classical pieces from the American Songbook, in which the Honduras-born artist uses for the first time English as the main language in one of her recordings.

ELLIS PAUL, also special guest SETH GLIER
Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Ellis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting. He was a principle leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990s. Ellis' charismatic, personally authentic performance style has influenced a generation of artists away from the artifice of pop, and closer towards the realness of folk. Though he remains among the most pop-friendly of today's singer-songwriters ~his songs regularly appear in hit movie and TV soundtracks~ he has bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger more successfully than perhaps any of his songwriting peers.
