This former member of Sun Ra's Arkestra and student of Ornette Coleman set the Caveau des Oubliettes on fire...His music was fresh and captured the mind without straying away too long from the strongest groove." Downbeat MagazineRay's newest CD, "Berries and Blues" serves you the fruits of his music-a story is told by merging jazz, blues and African folk rhythms. The players chosen for this project are brilliant musicians who came together on the gig in Paris, with a chemistry and sound that was nothing less than exceptional. Ray has preformed with Steve Turre, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, T.K. Blue, Bob Gaddy, Wycliff Gordon and Benny Powell. He plays with The Spirit of Life Ensemble and tours with The Ray Charles Show. The Warp/The Weft is a new musical collective, formed and fronted by Poughkeepsie singer-songwriter Shane Murphy. A progressive, alt-folk outfit, The Warp/The Weft pays evident homage to Jethro Tull, Tim/Jeff Buckley, Fairport Convention, while remaining wholly unique and compelling for its modern audience. The music is a part, a product--of reverence for--the natural landscape, but is rooted, too, in the culture of urban life and urban decay. Former DownBeat editor and Tim Buckley guitarist Lee Underwood has lauded Murphy for "a voice at once strong and ethereal; lyrics insightful and impassioned; music beautiful and uplifting." And from the September 2012 issue of the Hudson Valley's Chronogram: "[Murphy's] swooning, darkly expressive Tim Buckley-Scott Walker voice is surprising--here operatic, there a seething whisper, but always demanding attention...such lyrical prowess and vocal chops grant license to almost anything."

![]() Saturday 7:30 pm | John Hammond Blues, Acoustic, and Folk/Traditional | Common Ground @ South Church South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway Dobbs Ferry, NY See Map |
With a career that spans over three decades, John Hammond is one of handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-’60s. That revival, brought on by renewed interest in folk music around the U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great classic blues players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and Skip James. Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence. His latest release, “Rough & Tough,” has wasted no time and reached 13 on the Billboard Blues charts. “This recording is not unlike a live show that I would do except that there was no live audience to perform for,” says Hammond. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a solo album out, so I’m very happy with it." | My primary instrument is my voice, and my guitar embellishes, accompanies, and decorates it. My sound and style are my own. Exposure to music and vocal styles of all types, ranging from standards to jazz to folk/traditional to blues, and to the music of Great Britain, the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, have influenced my sound and led me to describe my music as "eclectic acoustic." I have opened for Christine Lavin and Dave Cousins and performed in Showcases and the Open Mic Finals at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY, and appeared in venues in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT. I perform a good mix of songs, including my own compositions, covers, and traditional music. I like to tell the stories of the traditional songs I sing and might focus on the song's provenance, themes, imagery, history, depiction of characters, etc. Listeners tell me that they enjoy learning about this traditional music.
