| The John St. Jam is the most talked-about music venue in the Hudson Valley. On the 2nd (and 5th) Saturday of every month we present 8 of the area’s best musicians in an intimate, living-room setting. We do two 'rounds' of four players each with an intermission. The room is cozy, the people friendly, and the performances are always top-notch. Musical styles range from folk to blues, from rock to ragtime. And it's all only $5! The "stage" is a big, comfortable rug in the middle of the room with four chairs arranged in a circle. The audience is seated around the outside and is never more than a few feet from the musicians. This format provides the intimacy of a living room and allows the musicians to interact in ways that aren't possible in the traditional coffeehouse format. for further information | ||
![]() Saturday 7:30 pm | Sloan Wainwright, Sharon Goldman Singer-Songwriter, Pop/Soft Rock, and Folk/Traditional | Common Ground @ South Church South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway Dobbs Ferry, NY See Map |
Folk-pop artist Sloan Wainwright belongs to a musical dynasty of impossibly gifted singer-songwriters. Sloan’s incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but her dramatically voiced rendition of her original songs. She’s folk-influenced, obviously (you can’t grow up in the First Family of Folk and not be, one imagines), but the real star here is her voice. Warm and smoky and smooth, it makes her earthy, ominous lyrics seem all the more intense. Defying standard categorization, singer/songwriter Sloan Wainwright consistently demonstrates her easy command of a variety of American musical styles — pop, folk, jazz and blues — held together by the melodious tone of her rich contralto. The end result, a unique and soulful hybrid. Sharon Goldman is a New Jersey-based singer-songwriter with over a decade of writing songs and four albums under her belt. Sunday 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm | Freebo Singer-Songwriter, Folk/Traditional, and Country | Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY See Map |
| Freebo is more than a beloved musician, he’s an institution. Most famous for the funkified precision and fluid soul of his bass playing for Bonnie Raitt, he’s also a longtime beloved studio cat, a musician’s musician, sought out for his greatness in the studio by everyone from Ringo and Dr. John to CSN, Aaron Neville, Maria Muldaur and the late great Willie DeVille. But Freebo is more than a great bass player- he’s also a richly gifted and distinctive songwriter, as expressive in his writing as on a bass. His song about homelessness -“When There’s No Place Like Home,” is dauntingly poignant- aiming high, to write a song about a subject so hopeless without being hopelessly maudlin or cliché. Freebo writes with an easy grace, as simple and right as the beautifully understated arrangement. Freebo’s time is now. | ||

Anyone who's followed Ray Wylie Hubbard over the long and winding path he has traveled already knows he possesses the kind of exceptional gift for observation that any songwriter yearns for. His sense of wonder is tempered by an accumulated wisdom and knowledge that comes with experience that has elevated him into the Wylie Lama of Texas Music, freely imparting songwriting verities to all kinds of aspiring musicians, which allows him to lay all his cards on the table and let the listener decide what it all means. It wasn't that long ago that Ray Wylie Hubbard allowed to an acquaintance that he wouldn't mind being a hybrid of Guy Clark and John Lee Hooker. Now, I'm no seer or mystic, but my instincts suggest that wish came true.Ray Wylie Hubbard writes the kind of songs that make you want to ride along no matter where he's going, because you know it's gonna get strange somewhere along the way.
