Unique among early '70s Progressive Rock bands, this pioneering outfit actually came from a '60s English Folk background and successfully merged the two genres. The group enjoyed commercial success in the US and UK with songs like Lay Down, Part Of The Union, and Down By The Sea, and has showcased a fine array of British musicians over the years, including keyboardist Rick Wakeman (prior to joining Yes). The Strawbs continue to be led by founder/singer/songwriter Dave Cousins, hailed by the All Music Guide as possibly "the most talented Dylan-influenced songwriter to come out of England."

Acoustic Alchemy enjoys a rich legacy of extensive airplay, loyal fans and critical reception for their many jazz/new age recordings, most notably featuring the guitar team of Nick Webb & Greg Carmichael. When Nick Webb passed away in 1998, he wanted Acoustic Alchemy to carry on in sharing their music, and so Greg Carmichael and longtime sidemen Frank Felix (bass), Greg Grainger (drums), and Fred White (keyboard) continue this happy task, spreading the spirit with the able assistance of guitarist Miles Gilderdale.

I'm very excited and honored to have been asked by Omega to lead a 5-day singing workshop at their beautiful campus in Rhinebeck, New York. (June 23-27) The workshop is called "Singing, Yoga, and Taking a Good Deep Breath". The workshop will focus on singing, (technique, interpretation, approach, improv etc) but will also deal with getting over whatever fears inhibit us in front of others and ourselves. The yoga piece is gentle and restorative. I use yoga stretches and breath to build up strength and to alleviate anxiety when singing. Participants can be singers at all levels and bodies of all types! No yoga experience is necessary and the stretching that we will do will be easy enough for all people to do. A good way to get into yoga if you've thought about it but haven't yet done so. The cost of the workshop is $325 plus housing (and there are all sorts of options covering that) Omega is FABULOUS and if you haven't been there, you should make a point to do so.

PETER TORK (of THE MONKEES) & SHOE SUEDE BLUES
Blues
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Long before The Monkees, Peter Tork was a well-respected musician/artist in the burgeoning New York folk scene. Peter's gift for playing a plethora of instruments generated high demand for his services as a sideman/back-up artist. Peter knocked around for several hungry years in the mid-'60s, 'hanging' and performing with the likes of John Phillips, Steven Stills and Dave Van Ronk. The fateful call, which would change Peter's life forever, came in June of 1965: Friend and confidant Steven Stills, not quite hitting the mark with his own audition, rang his buddy Peter, urging him to give it a go. Stills' remarks to the producers that he knew "just the man to fill the bill" were spot on. Not totally satisfied with fame, though, Peter never left his "starving artist" roots. He could forever be found jamming with bands, learning from them and honing his chops. Music legend Jimi Hendrix jammed with Peter on several occasions, calling him "The most talented Monkee."
