The New York Swing Exchange
Swing/Jump, Big Band
Bodles Opera House
39 Main Street
Chester, NY   See Map
The personnel of this 17-piece orchestra and vocalist are all professional musicians, whose talent and expertise in performing with a big, modern swinging band stems from the background of the individual players. Some of the members are alumni of the "Big Band" era of the 40's, 50's and 60's, coming from the popular New York City scene, as well as the recording industry. Background of others reaches into the music education area of public schools and universities. Add to this the fine vocal work of Maureen Morrissey and it makes a great mix, with everyone benefiting from this artistic diversification. Most of all, what makes this big, swinging band unique is the musician's love of performing as a group, with the great sounds that come from ensemble jazz and swing, as well as beautiful ballads. The sum total of all these ingredients equals toes tapping; fingers snapping; heads swaying; and those happy smiles on the faces of listening audiences as well as the dancers.

Guy Davis
Blues
Common Ground Coffeehouse
25 Old Jackson Avenue
Hastings-on-Hudson, NY   See Map
Whether appearing on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” on radio programs such as “A Prairie Home Companion, in front of 15,000 people at a major music festival, or teaching an intimate gathering of students at a music camp, Guy Davis feels the instinctive desire to give each listener his ‘all’. His ‘all’ is the Blues. The routes and roots of his blues are as diverse as the music form itself. It can be soulful, moaning out a people’s cry, or as playful and bouncy as a hayride. He’s a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. He’s appeared on television, in film, on the stage, both with and without his famous actor-activist parents Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis. But most important, and Guy Davis is a bluesman. For the past decade, he has concentrated on writing and recording. His latest album, “Legacy” was picked as one of the Best CDs of the Year by National Public Radio (NPR). Tickets are: $20 for individuals, and $15 for seniors and youth aged 12-18. Kids under 12 are free.

LENI STERN & THE AFRICAN PROJECT, also special guest TWO GUITARS
World, Folk/Traditional
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Leni Stern made a name for herself in jazz circles, but then crossed over into the singer-songwriter realm, garnering consistent praise in the process. Critics have said her music incorporates "intelligent lyrics and beautifully drawn vignettes" (Washington Post) -- "a gifted singer-songwriter with a wide-ranging sensibility and sophisticated guitar and harmonic chops" (The Boston Globe). They also call her a "fleet and lyrical guitarist" (The New Yorker) with "crystalline, jazz-meets-blues guitar lines" (Guitar Player). Leni's new album, Africa, continues to earn her praise for its authenticity and for the way she made the CD: recorded in Africa, with African musicians and at the pace of African life. The music integrates African & Western music forms with such distinction that it may come to be regarded as an "audio documentary" of African musical life.

OD's Presents Great Solo Acoustic Rock
with MARCO
Acoustic, Rock (modern)
O'Donoghue's of Nyack
66 Main St.
Nyack, NY   See Map
Marc Ferriera, aka MARCO is fast becoming one of OD's most popular artists. His brilliant takes on '80s and '90s Top 40s favorites, supported by fluid guitarwork, and augmented by just the right amount of electronic effects (so that he plays both rhythm and lead) make for an energetic, entertaining night of Rock & Roll. It's fun to watch Marco build a song, layer by layer, starting with congas, adding rhythm guitar that he sets into a loop, then frosting it with great leads and vocals,... bouncing back and forth between musical stations with a controlled abandon. The guy is a regular whirling dervish!

When not in Nyack, Marc, a multinational performer, sings lead for the French progressive metal band, Venturia, and he brings professionalism from that experience to his solo gigs. Recently he's become involved in a 3 piece alt group, THE BABYSITTERS, that we plan to book soon.

Furthermore . . . We're gonna celebrate the release of our FIRST FULL LENGTH CD, "Modern Sounds of Northern Towns". So if the House is Rockin', Don't Bother Knockin' -- Just Come On In ! Good Golly Jimmy Jazz, grab that tamborine 'cuz we're gonna have some fun doing "Shakedown" tonight ! Go to our myspace to hear the Album Sampler.

An all-ages show -- and -- NO COVER

* * * COME EARLY at 6 PM for May Pang’s book signing for her great new book, "Instamatic Karma".

Uncommon Ground is schooled in tradition yet is able to stretch out in inspired improvisation.
