Teaching Workshop
Dutchess Community College
53 Pendell Road
Poughkeepsie, NY   See Map
Dutchess Community College faculty member Danielle Woerner presents her 3-hour workshop, "Finding Your Voice" at the College.

A workshop-style class designed to acquaint students with their vocal capabilities and what we might call their "essential voice": the unique sound that belongs to each one of us when it is freed from tension, fear, and habits that interfere with it, and is supported by good basic technique. Novices and those who already sing are all welcome. Our work and play together will include fundamentals of vocal production, relaxation and centering exercises (after all, when we sing, our entire body is our instrument!), and forays into song. Enrollment limited to 9. Tuition $50.

Larry Chance & The Earls / HOTFLASH
oldies doo-wop
Bodles Opera House
39 Main Street
Chester, NY   See Map
Spanning from the late 1950's into the new millennium, the Earls have continuously been pleasing audiences with their flawless harmonies, ceaseless vitality and endearing dedication to their fans. Larry Chance & the Earls represent the music that helped define Rock 'N' Roll, the original doo wop era that put the street corner- society onto the national charts. Larry and company have placed many songs on the charts, including: “Life Is But a Dream”, “Never”, “I Believe”, and of course the classic “Remember Then”. They still enjoy performing them, and always include the audience as a part of the show. The Performance will feature audience participation and comedy. Larry's comedy talents were featured on the Imus in the Morning show, where he performed, memorably, for a ten year period as the voice of characters, such as, Geraldo "Santana Banana", and the streetwise "Rainbow Johnson". / Opening the show: HOTFLASH

Eliza Gilkyson was born in Hollywood where her folksinger father penned Bear Necessities for Disney. She moved to Santa Fe to pursue a different lifestyle and eventually raise a family, continuing to perform, write and record (Calling All Angels…Redemption Road and Misfits…Hard Times In Babylon). Tom Russell's colorful background includes a masters in criminology, teaching in Nigeria, a detective novel, a book of songwriting quotes (w/ Sylvia Tyson) and a long road in music, starting at the skid row strip bars in Vancouver, BC. Manhattan Transfer meets Monty Python…Robin Williams meets Bobby McFerrin…JS Bach meets Jimi Hendrix. Grammy-nominated vocal acrobats (and certifiable nutjobs) The Bobs return to the Towne Crier!

Celebrating their 25th Anniversary of skewering the classics, breaking all the rules and clear-cutting their own unique path in the world of vocal music, The Bobs have played everywhere from Lincoln Center to Los Angeles' Universal Amphitheater to Berlin's Passionkirche. Together since 1981, the original "band without instruments" has released 13 albums and several concert DVDs including the recent RHAPSODY IN BOB. The Bobs are also known for their ASCAP-award winning original material.

The Bobs' endurance is trumped only by their unrivaled creativity as they continue to infect audiences with their humor and musicality. To quote a recent review, "…the Bobs still shine, breaking new ground each time they tunnel out of the sanitorium."

If you are looking for cover band that isn't necessarily playing all the hits, but instead, playing songs that they like, then this is the band to see. If you are looking for an original act that has passion and intensity, then this is the band to see. Combining covers and originals is what these guys do best. Covering such artists as Neil Young, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, The Samples, Tom Petty and many more, they give their own taste and feel to many of the songs you don't normally hear being played by local bands. Their originals are simple and follow in the rock'n'roll spirit of music. A four-piece act you don't want to miss.

Kelly Joe Phelps plays acoustic country blues with achingly beautiful melancholy. Kelly Joe began playing with local jazz musicians at age 17, finding musical refuge in the sounds of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Miles Davis, which explains the underpinning of emotion and creativity in his guitar arrangements. But in 1989 he put jazz aside and never looked back, concentrating on the sound of country blues. Blues Revue said "Kelly Joe occupies a musical landscape somewhere between Blind Willie Johnson's burnt-down house and Springsteen's Nebraska." Guitarists will be awestruck by his right-hand technique but all will be pleased by his easygoing but expressive vocals and the nonlinear approach to his lyrics and instrumental work. He's made many appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, and his performances have garnered praise from publications around the world. He also produced an instructional video on slide guitar for the renowned Homespun Tapes catalogue.

An electric jazz guitarist since she was a teenager, Erin Hobson joined the world of acoustic music only 5 years ago. Her distinct sound fuses Folk with a strong Jazz and Latin influence, laying the foundation for subtly powerful vocals that express lyrics so raw and honest; they are like reading pages from her diary. Combine that with the talent of an accomplished musician and you have a style that is unique and memorable. Dynamic and melodic with fresh originality, this is passionate, ear catching music
