The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Catherine Miles and Jay Mafale.

~~~~~
Listening to Catherine Miles and Jay Mafale’s songs is like hearing a story from a good friend. Illustrated with everyday details that are almost tangible, they are at once personal yet universal. Catherine’s expressive voice is at times a powerhouse, at times warm and familiar. Jay’s guitar is alternately percussive and melodic, propelling the narrative. They couple these songs with a candidness and playful approachability on stage that disarms the audience, opening hearts just wide enough to let the light in.
~~~~~

Open mic performances will be available to all. Cost of admission for this event is $6 ($5 for Folk Guild members and seniors). Signup begins at 7 and open mic begins at 7:30.

As a young child, Kazi Oliver tapped out rhythms on many a household item, including tables, counters, even a sister or two. When his mother discovered that a local after school program offered African drumming, Kazi was promptly directed to attend. Since these early beginnings, he has truly become the drummers' version of the Pied Piper, engaging children and adults in experiencing the energy and excitement of African drumming.

Kazi has been teaching for 45 years and performing for over 40 years. Professionally, Kazi has performed at the Village Vanguard, the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and on ABC-TV's "The View." Yet Kazi enjoys just as much, his appearances at community festivals, schools and events that bring together multi-generational and multicultural audiences to experience and enjoy the awesome power of the African drum.

Joan Baez, in an interview for the New Your Times, said that writers of Ms. Jones’s caliber come along only every so often. “There’s some kind of channeling from some other lifetime going on, I don’t know the answer to these things, but all I can think of is that it must come from some mysterious part of her soul.”

Diana has performed and toured with artists including Richard Thompson, Nanci Griffith, Steve Earle, Mary Gauthier, Ralph Stanley, and Janis Ian.

American singer-songwriter Diana Jones has been called the “Emily Dickinson of song” and “the female Johnny Cash” in reviews and rightfully so. But a journey of adoption and reunion as mysterious as her songwriting led to the gritty, authentic, Americana storytelling that has become her life’s work and her live show.

“The pieces on "Eclectico" are modern and sophisticated. This is a group with something clever to say, and it sits well with the ears.” George W. Harris - Jazz Weekly

www.pablolanouguere.com

The newly formed “Pablo Lanouguere Quintet” is led by bassist/composer Pablo Lanouguere who has conceived of a new direction within the Argentine music. The elements of Argentine music styles- tango & folklore - are present, while elements from jazz, Latin, contemporary and classical music interact vividly with them.

Pablo Lanouguere - equally skilled and inventive as a bassist and composer - released the quintet's debut, Eclectico (2019). Comprising a dozen originals, the music crosses stylistic boundaries while rooted in creative jazz, modern tango, classical music and folk melodies of Lanouguere’s Argentinian heritage.

Hastings-on-Hudson, NY   See Map
MICHAEL FRANCIS McCARTHY is an itinerant American roots musician. Born and partially raised in South America, McCarthy developed an early love of music through childhood exposure to Bolivian folklore and Grateful Dead records. Picking up the guitar at age four, he began a 30 year odyssey that led him throughout the Americas, wandering the western hemisphere gathering the sounds of the deep south and remote cold north, of the cities and small towns, the cutting edge party towns and the forgotten roadside hollows of yesterday's blues and country circuits, forever in chase of the ghosts of his heroes - Hank, Duane, Jerry, Robert, Merle, Levon, Woody, Bob and the rest. His sound is at once traditional and fresh, featuring powerful vocals, dense guitar work and a repertoire of timeless material delivered with conviction. Based in the Hudson Valley region of upstate New York, McCarthy performs 200 shows a year from the Canada border to the Gulf Coast and all points in between.
