Shunzo Ohno
Jazz
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Grammy award winning artist Shunzo Ohno is a "brilliant trumpet stylist" whose playing and original compositions have touched millions. A versatile musician who has played, recorded and toured with such renowned leaders as Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Art Blakey, and many others. Mr. Ohno has 16 recordings under his own name as a leader and has appeared on over thirty more as a sideman.

Born in Gifu, Japan, Shunzo's career hit high gear when toured with Art Blakey‘s Jazz Messengers. The compelling Latin energy in Shunzo's playing can be linked to his tenure with the celebrated Machito and his Afro-Cuban Orchestra and he recorded the Grammy Award-winning album with Machito and His Salsa Big Band (1983).

Shunzo then joined master arranger and composer Gil Evans, becoming a key contributor on recordings, including the 1988 Grammy Award-winning "Live at Sweet Basil". Shunzo made a total of four recordings with Evans, who remained a lifelong mentor to him.

“Projecting a sense of isolation that is as powerful as its sense of place — the pull of the landscape is ever-present — it’s the kind of work that can be haunting and comforting at the same time.” No Depression “Scanlan evokes Western landscapes as effectively as Georgia O’Keefe did on canvas,” Dirty Linen

They can play anything.” Since its public debut at Carnegie Hall in 2006, the ensemble has thrilled audiences and students in 47 states as well as in the U.K., France, Belgium, Brazil, Panama, Canada, Venezuela, Japan, and South Africa.

John John Brown
Singer-Songwriter, Americana, and Folk/Traditional
Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
In the winter of 2013, right after his twin boys were born, John John Brown started writing songs that would turn into his debut album The Road. No Depression calls it "a supple and suggestive blend of astute Americana accompanied by a quiet, reflective glow", while Elmore Magazine dubbed him "one of the more promising young names in folk music today". John John's live performances have been garnering critical claim as well. In 2015 and 2017 he was chosen as a Kerrville Folk Finalist for the legendary New Folk Competition. He went home a winner of the South Florida Folk Fest in 2016, and he was recently selected as a 2017 Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Seeped in goody storytelling and fingerpicking melodies, John John Brown seems to have discovered part of the mystery that surrounds the great singer/songwriter tradition.
