Holly Near
Singer-Songwriter, Folk/Traditional. Topical
Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
Holly Near is respected for her music and activism - linking international feminism and anti-war activism through song. Honors have come in from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; she was named Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year and received the Legends of Women’s Music Award. Near was one of the first celebrities to discuss her sexual fluidity during a pioneering 1976 interview with People magazine. Still it is the sound of her voice that first catches the attention of audiences, clear and powerful after all these years. Her music is grounded in folk, but it is her comfort with theatricality and humor that makes her uniquely, Holly Near. “Music can influence choices. A lullaby can put a troubled child to sleep but Muzak can put a whole nation to sleep. A marching band can send our children off to war. It can also have everyone laughing and dancing and loving as it leads a gay-pride parade.”

Putnam Valley, NY   See Map
On Friday, Sept 15, at 7:30 PM, the Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will present the Tim Eriksen Trio in a return engagement, featuring Sacred Harp Singing and the distinctive musical innovations of the group. The Trio includes ballads, Appalachian music, instrumentals and vocals. Their music expands on old traditions and moves them into a contemporary statement. T-Bone Burnett calls Eriksen “one of the best voices in music.” Tim Eriksen is a great exponent and teacher of Sacred Harp. He is a musician, musicologist, and professor. He is also a powerful performer, and was leader of the punk/folk band “Cordelia’s Dad.” The band has released nine full-length albums, played The Newport Folk Festival, and toured with notable bands Nirvana, Uncle Tupelo, andWeezer. Tim was a consultant and performer in the film, “Cold Mountain,” and led the film to a great session in rural Alabama whose singers eventually performed at the Grammy awards.
