Empire State Railway Museum

Spuyten Duyvil is to standard folk music what a monsoon is to rain. Rich Warren, host of The Midnight Special on WFMT says that seeing a Spuyten Duyvil show for the first time is like “throwing a cherry bomb into a lake”.

No Depression Magazine calls Spuyten Duyvil “infused in blues and smoked with folk”. The New York Times offers up a two word summation of their sound; “Raucous Roots”.

Described as a “mighty powerhouse” by The Huffington Post, they exude the energy needed to hold down the stage at storied gatherings like The Philadelphia Folk Festival, where they are repeat performers.

This concert will be held inside the intimate acoustically exquisite old Phoenicia Railway Station with very limited seating. Tickets are $17 or $15 with RSVP to flyingcatmusic@gmail.com. For more info call 845-688-9453. Door opens 7:00 pm

Kentucky Bluegrass Comes to Putnam Valley
with James Reams and the Barnstormers, Tompkins Corners Cultural Center
Bluegrass
Tompkins Corners Cultural Center
729 Peekskill Hollow Road
Putnam Valley, NY   See Map
Between the Wildlife West Music Festival in Albuquerque, NM in July, and the Park Slope Jamboree in Brooklyn, New York in September, James Reams is bringing bluegrass to Putnam Valley with a full band combining traditional bluegrass and the pain of social outcasts. Some of his original songs are "Where No Heart Goes Hungry," "Coal in My Soul," and "Troubled Times." Coming from a family of traditional singers in southeastern Kentucky, James Reams has played both old-time and bluegrass music since he was just a little sprout. His music features driving rhythm and hard-edged harmonies that take you back to a time before bluegrass was smoothed out for the uninitiated, the ill-prepared or the faint of heart.

His latest album, Rhyme & Season, celebrates the perpetual pilgrim that lives within all of us with songs about the different journeys that life takes us on. He hopes to raise awareness about the homeless and is donating a portion of that album proceeds to a local charity.

Regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players in the US, Baltimore’s Ken Kolodner has joined forces with his son Brad Kolodner, one of the finest practitioners of the clawhammer banjo, to perform tight and musical arrangements of original and traditional old-time music with a “creative curiosity that lets all listeners know that a passion for traditional music yet thrives in every generation.” The dynamic father-son duo pushes the boundaries of the Appalachian tradition by infusing their own brand of driving, innovative, tasteful and unique interpretations of traditional and original fiddle tunes and songs. Performing on hammered dulcimer, fiddles, banjo, gourd banjo, hammered mbira, guitar and banjola, the Kolodners have recorded three CDs (Otter Creek in 2011, Skipping Rocks in 2013, and The Swift House in 2017). With the generous support of Blue Cross and Blue Shield the Newburgh Jazz Series 2017 will offer free world class jazz concerts on the Newburgh waterfront during the entire month of August. When the Ferry Godmother was asked to take the free concerts away from the waterfront in 2011 she promised she would be back and she has done it. Executive Producer at Ferry Godmother Productions Aquanetta Wright, affectionately known as the Ferry Godmother is the creator of Newburgh Jazz Series in 2007. "Our goal is to bring great music back to the Newburgh waterfront at least twice a week during the months of July and August, just as it once was". Aquanetta continues "we are excited to be moving closer to that goal as we welcome aboard Blue Cross and Blue Shield as our Premier Sponsor this year". All concerts are open to the public and free of charge. They are set with the beautiful Hudson River as the backdrop each Thursday in August, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

with Mike Herman
Acoustic, Blues, and Folk/Traditional. ragtime, bluegrass, old-timey, originals
Zephyr Restaurant
302 Main Street
Pine Hill, NY   See Map
This acoustic fingerstyle blues guitar player is driven by his deep desire to keep the music of days gone by fresh and alive. Mike Herman lives in the Catskills, and teaches guitar.

He has played in the acoustic blues duo, The Hell Hounds, having recorded three of their own CDs, and contributing to two compilations for Larchmont Recordings with other artists such as: Rhonda Vincent, Sue Foley, and Duke Robillard. They have performed at concerts, festivals, clubs and colleges up and down the East Coast and into the Midwest, and have opened for notables such as Roy Bookbinder, John Hammond and Bob Margolin.

Now a solo player, Mike has blended his influences of acoustic blues, bluegrass, ragtime and most recently old-timey music into a style uniquely his own. His originals speak of life and the trials and tribulations it may dish out.

His whole-souled talent and skill in composing is only heightened by his masterful marriage of words and music.

Don't miss Mike!

Jeremy Baum - Hammond Organ Devin Daversa - Guitar/Vocals Manuel Quintana - Drums Both traditional and trailblazing...Highly recommended. ***Blues Review Magazine Baum's playing has a deep funk to it, with a big influence of Jimmy Smith. And Baum also brings in all kinds of other things as well - dissonant jazz, alternative rock, R&B. He's not too far off from what John Medeski does with MMW, but with more of a blues streak to it. ***Jim Tragaser

He’s been playing festivals and jazz clubs in the New England region since the release of his first album. JB’s Band was also featured on Boogaloo to McDuff, a tribute to Jack McDuff, available on Scufflin’ Records. Back in the studio for his sophomore release, The Eel, on Flying Yak Records, Jeremy Baum knocks it out of the park with 10 Hammond organ and piano driven arrangements. Only one night in the Hudson Valley!
with Lords of Liechtenstein
Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic, and Americana
High Falls Café
12 Stone Dock Rd.
High Falls, NY   See Map
The Lords of Liechtenstein is a contemporary folk duo based in New York City consisting of two brothers, Dan and Noah Rauchwerk. The Lords often draw comparisons to The Everly Brothers for their harmonic sensibilities and to The Smothers Brothers for their mischievous onstage interactions. They write purposeful lyrics to tell musical stories that fluctuate between heart-wrenchingly sad and outlandishly ridiculous topics. The Lords have opened for musical stalwarts Buckwheat Zydeco, and have been featured on NPR's syndicated Mountain Stage program. Their newest album, Downhill Ride to Joyland, is a raucous fifteen-song romp through the ups and downs of human existence.

Their current tour includes Kate Copeland, an award-winning singer/songwriter composer/arranger in New York City. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory's composition program, ASCAP declared her this year's winner of the prestigious Robert Allen Award.
