 Microphone technique is one of the most, if not THE most, overlooked piece of the "make music sound great" puzzle. It starts with the source (the singer, the drummer, the guitarist) and the very next thing that happens is sound going into a microphone. There is a deep well of knowledge to be had here and knowing what microphone to use, where to put it in space, and **WHY** will do more for your sound than nearly any other choice you make, other than picking an instrument to use.
So please join Rick Birmingham, 25+ year veteran "sound guy", as we discuss techniques and guidelines for things like: nine good ways to mic a drum kit, what exactly is happening when you grab the ball of a microphone, how to avoid the mysterious "phase issues", designing a "finished sound" before you even hit the record button, how to "work a compressor" as a singer, and multiple overall sonic approaches to achieve "the sound in your head".

 The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern, will be featuring John Fisher on Saturday, January 9 at 7:30 p.m. Open mic performances will be available to all. John Fisher was born and raised in New York City. He originally studied classical guitar with a student of Segovia, then transitioned to electric guitar, playing Jazz, Blues and Rock with bands throughout New York. Eventually, John became enthralled with songwriting, and started playing and studying with hit songwriters like Grammy winner, Lou Stallman and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Hugh Prestwood. Musically, John Fisher aims to create singable songs that combine complex musical hooks with powerful storytelling and sophisticated themes. He is a highly accomplished guitarist, with a smooth, emotive male vocal.

"What I try to do with the shows," Stack said, "is feature people and have an ensemble sound where everybody is contributing.”
During his sophomore year at SUNY Purchase, Stack was tapped to join the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble and he toured extensively in Europe. He returned to college, graduated, lived in New York City for more than a decade and then found himself in the Hudson Valley, living in Hudson. |

 Anthony Rispo is a singer-songwriter, composer, organist, and pianist. He started playing the Pipe Organ at the age of 9 and by the age of 13 began taking formal organ lessons with Donald Dumler, Principal Organist Emeritus at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. He continued studying the organ at The Juilliard School.
Anthony’s music varies in style, but distinct melody is at the center of each variation: with lush, flowing string arrangements to music that showcases how a synth hook can accentuate a fun pop song; from folk inspired music to R&B grooves.
Anthony has worked on his latest single, “Lightning”, with Los Angeles producer, Lee Curreri and with Anthony Bilancia of Small Room Studios in Yonkers, NY who produced “Your Truth”, Anthony Rispo’s first single. Currently, Anthony is planning the production of his first album with Grammy Award Winning drummer Vito Luizzi.

Mark’s 2013 CD “Everything Returns” with his trio “Canvas Moon” has been surprisingly popular. He is currently recording and performing solo.

 Jeffery Broussard is one of the most influential accordionists and vocalists in modern Zydeco music.
Born in Lafayette, LA, Jeffery’s music career started very early, playing drums in his father’s band, the renowned Delton Broussard & The Lawtell Playboys. Although he left school for farm work to help his parents, Jeffery would sneak in to the house, get his daddy’s accordion and teach himself to play. It was in his brother Clinton’s band, Clinton Broussard & The Zydeco Machines that Jeffery played in public for the first time.
Whether he is playing a festival stage in front of thousands of dancers, a small theater of seated patrons, giving an interview, teaching a lesson or playing at a trailride, his warmth, love of the music, and talent shine.

 The year 2015 has brought loss and change to the acclaimed soul/blues/gospel band The Holmes Brothers. Holmes Brothers drummer Willie “Popsy” Dixon died on January 9, 2015 of cancer. In April 2015, Wendell Holmes, vocalist, guitarist, pianist and songwriter, announced his retirement from touring and performing due to health concerns, having been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension.
Older brother, Sherman Holmes, vocalist, bassist, pianist, and songwriter with The Holmes Brothers, will continue to celebrate and explore The Holmes Brothers legacy, leading a new band: The Sherman Holmes Project with Brooks Long.
In late 2013, Wendell began working with a young and talented guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Baltimore blues and soul musician, Brooks Long. Wendell had been formally mentoring Brooks with the assistance of a Maryland Traditions Apprenticeship Award.
