Joe Louis Walker
Blues
The Falcon
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The award-winning guitar slinger, deeply soulful vocalist and gifted songwriter has been releasing groundbreaking music since 1986, but his career goes all the way back to the mid-1960s. As a 16-year-old, he was the house guitarist at San Francisco's famed musical playground, The Matrix, where he played with or opened shows for everyone from Lightnin' Hopkins (who once threw him off the stage) to Jimi Hendrix to Thelonious Monk. The New York Times raves, "Walker is a singer with a Cadillac of a voice. He delivers no-nonsense, gutsy blues. His guitar solos are fast, wiry and incisive, moaning with bluesy despair." According to Living Blues, he is "one of today's modern musical masters." Rolling Stone simply calls him "ferocious."

Peekskill, NY   See Map
Anaïsa bring great grooves, hot improvisation, and tremendous excitement to every performance. In Anaïsa, the jazz world is seeing a great leap forward for women in creative music—Latin jazz is never going to be the same.

This quartet includes women of diverse musical backgrounds, all of whom are well-established in the standard realm of Latin jazz, but who also bring their individual and collective experiences in American jazz, salsa, merengue, Dominican, Puerto Rican and Cuban folk music, samba, reggae, and rock. In the pantheon of deities in Palo, the Afro-Catholic folk religion of the Dominican Republic, Anaïsa is one of the most powerful. The goddess of love, compassion and goodwill, she finds her greatest expression through music. This exciting band takes her name and pulls together some of the finest women musicians playing in Latin jazz today.

Phoebe's Place
445 Cedar Lane
Teaneck, NJ   See Map
I am so excited to be playing a show about three blocks from where I spent my entire childhood! This is a brand-new arts café that derives its name from another former (though much more renowned) Teaneckian, the late, great Phoebe Snow. (I went to school with her younger sister, in fact.)

From a Star Ledger article: "Phoebe's Place, a new space dedicated to music, art, and poetry, is taking over the old Blast Coffee Bar space at 445 Cedar Lane...Phoebe's Place promises food as well as music and poetry. Michelle Schotanus, the former owner and chef of the respected and sorely missed Salsa! Mexican restaurant in Edgewater has agreed to take her talents to Teaneck. Lunch will be served from noon until 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday; dinner hours are 6 p.m to 10 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday."

There you have it! I very seldom get to that area, so I sure hope you can come!

WISHBONE ASH
Rock (classic)
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash has more than 20 original studio recordings and several live albums to their credit. The group has appeared at all the major music festivals and enjoys a history with some of the world’s classic music labels, Universal and Atlantic Records. Back in the day, Wishbone Ash cut their teeth on the US stadium circuit first opening for The Who. Once they began headlining in the States, Wishbone’s opening acts included Springsteen, Kiss and Aerosmith. Citing Wishbone Ash as an influence on their style, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Southern Rock outfits like Lynyrd Skynyrd and, more recently, heavyweights like Opeth and some of the guitar-based Indie/ Alternative bands, have all taken a little something from the legendary twin-guitar approach of Wishbone Ash. Truly, there is no other rock band on the planet that has done more with the twin guitar concept than the Ash.

Soñando
Latin
The Falcon
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The hot Latin sounds of Soñando have earned them the reputation as the Hudson Valley's premier Latin band. This spicy blend of music and musicians have performed in clubs, at private functions, community festivals, benefit concerts, on radio and television, as well as the Puerto Rico Day Parade in NYC, but the band is at home wherever a dance floor can be cleared. Fueled by a fiery rhythm section and high-octane horns, Soñando plays a wide variety of Latin styles from Plena and Son to Salsa and Merengue! "The name of the band is Spanish for "dreaming" but when the hordes come out for Soñando, they don't sleepwalk-they dance. And we're not talking a few perfunctory head-bobs or butt-wiggles, they dance until they go up in flames like, Tula's unquenchable bedroom in the Cuban lyrics above." -Woodstock Times

His Vibes Quartet-including pianist Austin Johnson, drummer David Potter, and bassist Will Goble-will release their newest album, In a World of Mallets, on February 19th, 2013, and with a fire in his heart and a passion for the music, Jason's will to swing has never been more resolute.

As a vibraphonist, Jason's playing is unique and he often joins Shannon Powell and other New Orleans musicians on the bandstand. He has worked with such international jazz luminaries as Joe Henderson and Lionel Hampton, and with bands as diverse as Casa Samba (Brazilian) to Neslort (jazz fusion); and tours as the featured soloist with the Lionel Hampton Tribute Orchestra. His sense of style and tastefulness is well documented on recordings with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Marcus Printup, John Ellis, Fredrik Kronkvist, Stephen Riley, and Marcus Roberts to name a few.

Best known for his top ten hit, Lullaby, Shawn Mullins' musical accomplishments include a dozen self-produced records, two number one charting songs, a grammy nomination and thousands of live performances. One of his favorite accomplishments was the decision of the Austrailian Olympic Team to use his song Shimmer as their anthem. Since Shawn Mullins' Honeydew in 2008, the Atlanta-based singer/songwriter/bandleader has undergone a series of transformative experiences, leading to a "second coming" for the veteran artist. Evidence of Mullins' newfound level of musical and lyrical ambition courses comes through with his new album on Vanguard, Light You Up. This captivating new song cycle will likely be viewed as a flat-out revelation even by Mullins' most fervent fans. Mullins is active observer of life, translating life into song.

Songwriter Rob Morsberger has met his recent diagnosis of terminal cancer with a relentless drive towards making as much music as time allows.

On 2/15, Rob will release a 22-song double-CD, 'Early Work 1986-1995', a surprising, eclectic overview of Morsberger's search for his ''voice' as a literate songwriter; guest singers include Loudon Wainwright III, Marshall Crenshaw, and Suzzy Roche. The double CD reveals the early work of a uniquely talented man, as he navigates a decade of his life and his art.

For this concert, Rob will be joined by Suzzy Roche, a founding member of the singing group The Roches. For over thirty-five years she's performed throughout the US and Europe and made over twenty recordings. She has just completed a new collection of songs with her daughter, Lucy Wainwright Roche, called Fairytale and Myth which features Rob Morsberger on piano, and includes a cover of his brilliant song Everyone Wants To Be Loved.

What is a "Showcase"? Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Neil Young – even the greatest talents started somewhere. Sometimes it was at an open mic. And when they got good enough, they were invited to perform in a showcase with a few other talented artists. Our showcases, held on many Sunday nights, feature the best of local and regional talents. Yes, they are unknowns – for now. But they're good. For some, it's a launch pad to a great career. Somewhere, there are people who can say, "I saw Bob Dylan when he was just a kid starting out." Tonight, we're featuring singer-songwriters Jarred Wientraub, Lily Arnell and Eric Feldhausen.

A high-energy, contagiously exuberant five piece New Orleans-style brass band, the BITING FISH is Howard Fishman’s tribute to the Big Easy. The band performs originals mixed with a classic brass band repertoire of spirituals, blues, gospel and funk. Featuring tuba, trombone, trumpet and drums and vocals, this project is featured on the Howard Fishman recording "BETTER GET RIGHT." Fishman began his musical career on the streets of New Orleans and in the subways of New York . Since then, he has headlined in some of the most prestigious venues in the US and abroad. A testament to his wide-ranging appeal, Fishman has appeared on bills with such diverse artists as: Odetta, Yo Yo Ma, Maceo Parker, Robyn Hitchcock, Madeleine Peyroux and Allen Holdsworth. Fishman filters a deep passion for New Orleans jazz, Brooklyn soul, open-hearted country, blues and gospel music through a completely original, experimental aesthetic, to create a sound entirely his own.

NY-based Americana artist Susan Kane released her third CD, A Word Child just before the end of 2012. Its eclectic tracks address timeless and universal themes of love, loss, and hope. In addition to original compositions, there are covers of some famous writers and some lesser known. A Word Child borrows its name from the title of an Iris Murdoch novel. The production features beautifully produced arrangements with carefully crafted harmonies and just right instrumentation to suit the nuances of each song. Like her two previous releases, it has been well received by radio the world-over.

You'll enjoy this intimate look at how musicians do what they love to do best: "play".

JP has been on the Blues music scene for years, and is a tremendously talented front-man, vocalist and songwriter. He plays Blues harp and alto sax, and always performs with passion and energy. His audiences feel it... and love it. His original songs are full of wit and charm. Songs like "Simple Request (Stop Breaking My Balls)" and "Shy of Indigo" showcase his talents as a funky Blues musician who's taking his art to the next level.
