Rock (classic). and Big Band to the max!
The Falcon

Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. After all, when most people think of “big bands” they think of Duke and Dorsey. But go to see Ed Palermo’s Big Band and you might hear Zappa, Hendrix, the blues of Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, loaded with lush turns and unexpected twists. Gil Evans wonderfully articulated Palermo’s unusual approach to traditional instrumentation: Napoleon Murphy Brock- American singer, saxophonist and flute player, Napoleon Murphy Brock, is best known for his work with Frank Zappa in the 1970s, including the albums One Size Fits All, Roxy and Elsewhere, and Bongo Fury. His own most memorable vocal accomplishments are illustrated on the songs "Village of the Sun" and "Florentine Pogen." www.napoleonmbrock.com

Antje Duvekot, The Sea, The Sea (Chuck E. Costa and Mira Stanley)
Folk/Traditional, Acoustic, and Singer-Songwriter
Common Ground @ South Church
South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway
Dobbs Ferry, NY   See Map
No one writes quite like Antje Duvekot, who was influenced lyrically by the very greats — Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen, who are Mt. Rushmore-like figures to her. “Antje is the rare artist who can write about the social and the personal in the same breath,” says folk icon Ellis Paul. “Her voice has a sound of innocence and naivete which makes razor-sharp insights into the human condition.” And as Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh says, “Antje is the whole package.”

They meet in the middle with acoustic guitars. Standing next to other contemporary duos like The Weepies, The Civil Wars, The Swell Season, The Sea, The Sea is spare beauty, bravely unadorned. Or as the gifted singer-songwriter Amy Speace said about them “Two voices that blend like smoke and air. Like night and a whisper. Two distinct award-winning songwriters that meet in the mercury, collide and create emotionally spare music. Simple and true.”

Pawling, NY   See Map
Garland Jeffreys has been called an edgy urban poet, the sound of New York, a confessional singer-songwriter and an explorer of the links between rock, race and rebellion whose work should be taught in schools. With songs covered by artists as diverse as punk pioneers The Circle Jerks ("Wild in the Streets") and the neo-folk band Vetiver ("Lon Chaney"), Jeffreys is truly unclassifiable. Long known for his amazing roster of supporting musicians, such as Dr. John, Sonny Rollins, James Taylor, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Phoebe Snow, Garland's new, highly acclaimed The King Of In Between includes contributions from Duncan Sheik and old friend Lou Reed. It is the distillation of a long career dedicated to addressing socially conscious themes across a broad range of musical styles, and has been on a number of year-end best of lists including Rolling Stone, NPR Music, NY Daily News, Sound and Vision and MSN Music.

This is a special showcase for us, featuring winners of Young Artist Talent Search competitions we have hosted here at the Towne Crier Cafe. What is a "Showcase"? Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Neil Young – even the greatest talents started somewhere. Sometimes it was at an open mic. And when they got good enough, they were invited to perform in a showcase with a few other talented artists. Our showcases, held on many Sunday nights, feature the best of local and regional talents. Yes, they are unknowns – for now. But they're good. For some, it's a launch pad to a great career. Somewhere, there are people who can say, "I saw Bob Dylan when he was just a kid starting out."

Join us for a special presentation of J.S. Bach’s Cantata 147, “Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben.” This beautiful cantata includes the famous chorale known in English as “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” Audience members will be treated to soprano, alto, tenor, and bass solos and a chamber orchestra with trumpet, 2 oboes, bassoon, strings, and continuo. A timeless classic! Juilliard trained Rachel Evans will round out the program with her performance of a sonata for solo violin by 17th century Austrian composer Heinrich Biber. Performed under the direction of Edward Lundergan and accompanied by chamber orchestra, the cantata will be performed within the context of an evensong service. The service is open to the public with a $10 suggested donation.

Terry Burns, youngest of the acclaimed Burns Sisters, recorded 3 Cd's with her sisters and later became a successful singer/songwriter for major publishing companies such as Larga Vista, EMI and MCA/Universal in Nashville. Ron Kristy's music scoring can be heard around the world on shows such as "20/20", "Dancing with the Stars", "Jimmy Kimmel Live", and "How I Met Your Mother". They met at a friend's party in Nashville in 2004 and since then, fell in love, got married, and had a sweet little boy - Noah Skye. They moved to upstate New York, where they have been performing regionally and recording their first CD together, "Caravan". Burns & Kristy released ‘Caravan’ to Folk Radio in July 2012, debuted on the charts in August at #16, remaining in the Top 20 in September. Says John Apice at No Depression: "atmospherics – like the one here in “Caravan”, that simply won’t age over the next decades but become something that will be worth coming back to – like a good novel.”
