In each song she tells a story - reflecting personal growth and change and evoking empathy, images and pathos. She does this with confessional, conversational and often humorous lyrics. Her style is a mixture of pop, folk, classical, sometimes even jazz and country; but somehow it is all part of who she is and the musical journey she takes you on. She has been compared style-wise to Carol King and Laura Nyro. Her voice is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins: clear, honest and flexible; both ethereal and down to earth, as she puts it, "head in the clouds, feet on the ground". Special 2 PM matinee with singer/songwriter Greg Greenway & special guest Joe McKay. OLM Academy. Doors 1:30 PM. www.cafeacoustic.org 201-573-0718
Originally from VA, Greg Greenway moved to Boston for its rich Folk Music tradition & has become one of its most unique and superlative emissaries. Put simply, he is one of the finest entertainers you'll ever see. Musically, he draws inspiration from all over the map--gospel, rock, blues, Jazz, & world music. But his center is in the singer/songwriter tradition that traces it roots all the way back to the social awareness of Woody Guthrie. His central appeal is that it all comes through the singular lens of Greenway's humanity & his easy affinity for the audience. The Boston Globe wrote, "Confessional one moment, rambunctiously disarming the next, few modern folk singers can own a coffeehouse stage as completely as Greenway."
Greg is also part of acclaimed harmony trio, Brother Sun, with Pat Wictor & Joe Jencks.

Most of you have heard by now that The High Falls Cafe will be moving to their new location at The Stone Dock Golf Course in a matter of weeks and we look forward to the dawn of an exciting new era there. But that makes Tuesday night the Last Go-Round for blues on the corner of Mohonk Road and Route 213. We hope you can come out and celebrate with us, and give the old place a rousing send off. Division Street @ Esther Peekskill, NY See Map |
Lead singer Nee Nee Rushie, a native of Jamaica, leads her five bandmates in what is arguably one of the best upstate NY groups in recent memory.Keeping alive the tradition of roots/ska/reggae realness, the Big Takeover's refreshingly upbeat and original. You'll find it hard to believe that all the cuts on their Debut CD "Following Too Close" are originals, as they magnificently capture early rocksteady riddims with supertight songwriting. The Big Takeover leans hard toward reggae's more up-tempo parents, ska and rocksteady, and their high energy has audiences jamming from start to finish. There newest CD, "Tale of My Life" has gotten rave reviews. "...the intensely jubilant music the Big Takeover makes is the sound of Rushie, as well as her five gifted cohorts, spreading their creative wings—and picking up more and more new fans as they fly along."-Peter Aaron, Chronogram Admission: $10 | ||
