The New Riders Of The Purple Sage, signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, released its eponymous first album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million records. NRPS began as a part-time spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia (pedal steel guitar), Phil Lesh (bass) and Mickey Hart (drums) teamed up with John Dawson (guitar, vocals) and David Nelson (guitar). Although early live appearances were viewed as an informal warm-up to the main attraction, the group quickly established an independent identity through the strength of Dawson's original songs. By 1970 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh, and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had joined as the group's permanent drummer. Garcia remained in both The Dead and The New Riders until he found himself over-committed, at which time Buddy Cage replaced him, and the classic NRPS lineup was born.

They are a mix between country and blues. This band is comprised of Tony Merando on Vocals and Acoustic Guitar, Ben Ribble on electric guitar, Jeff MacAulay as Session guitarist and bass player, Claude LeHenaff on Drums, and Tom Ayers on keyboards. The Reddan Brothers are a hard hitting blues/rock trio with the miles to back it. The Reddan Brothers grew up backing legends of blues and rock such as Bill Perry, Popa Chubby and Jimmy Vivino. With their newly released CD “Skeleton Key Sessions” those road miles seem to be put to good use. The group has been seen on such high profile gigs as Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble, Winchester Blues House Festival and the Blues on the Bridge Festival. The youthful energy of the band mixed with seasoned playing makes them a must see trio.
Think 60's Northern Soul, a little Burt Bacharach, a bit of free association, a dash of Bowie and James Brown, and you have "Comic Tales of Tragic Heartbreak". This piano-driven, soul-influenced band features an incredible live show with crazy energy, outrageous humor, and unbelievable originality. A "Performance-Art / Rock combo", with lead singer, songwriter, and trumpeter Robert Whaley dancing and jumping from stage to dance floor with unabashed abandon.

"Me and My Ex" is made up of 2 New Paltz residents Ginny Leitner and Rob Leitner: but don't let the last names fool you - they really are divorced, but are still literally making beautiful music together (alas, the figurative "music" disappeared awhile back...). Come see them play a mixed bag of folk, light rock and country covers. And, they promise not to bicker on stage (although she has been known to roll her eyes from time to time...!). Keith Newman will be sitting in with additional guitar and vocals.

In the wake of the wildly successful first annual NADA Hudson Art Event, which brought 1000s through the Basilica this past weekend, we are thrilled to announce our first official Music Night – Saturday August 13th, 2011 in conjunction with the first annual Hudson Music Fest and Hudson Black Arts & Cultural Festival. The evening will include Live performances by Dischord and Thrill Jockey recording artist, DANIEL HIGGS and Brooklyn Based (Part-time Hudson Valley-ians) multi-tasking duo BUKE & GASS. Followed by DJ sets by acclaimed wild card NYC DJs DJBDG aka BRIAN DEGRAW of GANG GANG DANCE and JD SAMSON (MEN and LE TIGRE). We're thrilled to welcome back singer/songwriter/guitarist John Hall to The Towne Crier after his two terms as US Congressman. The average music fan may associate John Hall with blockbuster Orleans hits like Still The One and Dance with Me, but those familiar with him know his more eclectic work. He wrote for Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, The Doobie Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, Ricky Skaggs and James Taylor. John has also played guitar solos on records by Taj Mahal, Carly Simon and Little Feat. As one of the organizers of the historic No Nukes concerts, he was among the performers featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine with co-producers Graham Nash, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt.

It is obvious that the Hudson Valley is fertile with talented musicians, singers and young bands ...and we want to give them an opportunity to show us! With the popularity of such shows as "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent," this is a great opportunity for these blossoming musicians to showcase their talents in front of entertainment industry professionals, and hone their skills on a stage that, for nearly four decades, has hosted hundreds of musicians while they were "up-and-coming," including Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, Leon Redbone and many, many others. These shows will be held every Sunday, beginning July 10, 2011 until the finale & award ceremony on August 21, 2011.

Doug MacLeod is our very special guest this time around. Doug is a traveling artist that writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived the life and carries forward a valuable tradition. MacLeod is known for his superb songwriting, guitar wizardry, warm soulful vocals, wit and unforgettable live performances. Doug has played with Big Mama Thornton, Lowell Fulson, Big Joe Turner and many other blues greats. His tunes have been covered by artists from Albert King to Eva Cassidy. Doug will begin the evening with a 40 minute solo acoustic set and then the band will join in for the usual dancing and carrying on.

Held the 3rd Thursday of every month, our Rock Jam is hosted by members of 'The Track' with special guests and alternates. All members are local singer songwriters who have come together in their love of ROCK. With Drew Bordeaux, the house guitarist/MC who occasionally switches it up on violin and bass, Rich Kelly on bass, Chris Burke on keys and Tito Wilson on drums and vocals.
