Since forming in 1988, Tempest has delivered a globally-renowned hybrid of high-energy folk rock fusing Irish reels, Scottish ballads, Norwegian influences and other world music elements. Hailing from Oslo, Norway, founding member and lead singer/electric mandolinist Lief Sorbye is recognized as a driving force in the modern folk-rock movement. Cuban-born drummer Adolfo Lazo, an original Tempest member, colors the band's sound with inventive percussion. Tempest is regularly featured at prestigious festivals including The Philadelphia Folk Festival, Denmark's Skagen Festival, and Britain's Cropredy Festival. Bob Malone has toured the world tirelessly, logging over 100 dates a year both as a headliner and as support act for The Neville Brothers, Rev. Al Green, Boz Scaggs, Manhattan Transfer, Leon Russell, Subdudes, and Vonda Shepard, to name just a few. Current awards include Artist of the Year and Singer/Songwriter Album of the Year at the Just Plain Folks 2006 Music Awards, Songwriter of the Year at the 2007 South Bay Music Awards, and the ASCAP Plus Award.Drawing from a vast spectrum of traditional American rural and urban roots music, the internationally acclaimed, Brooklyn-based quartet, The Wiyos, craft a startlingly fresh yet strangely familiar sound. Taking their name from the late 19th century NY city Irish street gang, the Whyos, the band began as street performers in New York and New Orleans. The group has spent over six years touring Europe, the UK and the US, honing their virtuosic musical chops and fusing their tireless curiosity of various traditional American musical idioms with their own contemporary influences. They have arrived at a show that is as much visually exciting as it is sonically evocative. Their song repertoire combines original compositions with covers from tin-pan alley to western swing. A typical show may include rustic sounds of the 1930's and 40's as well as electric post-modern sound-scapes with smart lyrics. The Wiyos have recently been featured in the BBC film documentary: Folk America-Hollerers, Stompers, and Old-time Ramblers; for which they played to a sold-out audience of two thousand at the Barbican Theater in London.
