Our good friend and legendary songwriter JOHN STEWART passed away on Saturday, January 19, after a massive stroke. A tribute memorial show to benefit John Stewart's family will be held on this evening, the night he was scheduled to return to our stage.Possibly one of America's greatest but often overlooked singer-songwriters, JOHN STEWART was a member of the Kingston Trio from 1961-67, and author of some of their best material. His 1967 song, Daydream Believer, was a million seller for the Monkees. In 1980 he had a #5 hit with "Gold," backed by Stevie Nicks. California Bloodlines, his 1969 album, is ranked among the best rock albums of all time by a Rolling Stone magazine international critics' poll. His stature rests on much other work, consistent in quality but not always as commercially successful. More info at the Towne Crier Cafe

Individually, these veteran pickers have been winning honors (too numerous to mention here) since the early '70s. They have also toured with the likes of Bill Keith, Doc & Merle Watson, the Country Gentleman, Norman Blake and, of course, The McKrells -- playing alongside these other legends and/or opening for them on stages from country festivals to Carnegie Hall. Together, in this new progressive bluegrass band, they play fast and fun, but their compositions also express the entire range of human emotion.More info at the Towne Crier Cafe
