Unison Arts Center
68 Mt. Rest Rd.
New Paltz, NY   See Map
Betty and the Baby Boomers perform a range of folk styles knit together by three and four part vocal harmonies. Betty Boomer, Jean Valla McAvoy, Paul Rubeo, and Steve Stanne all sing, with instrumental backup by Steve, an accomplished guitarist and Dobro player, and Paul on guitar and bodhran (the Irish skin drum). Their sets improvise on the mood of the audience, the day, and the setting, drawing on twenty years of making music together. Among songs topical, whimsical, and insightful, expect to hear selections reflecting the Boomers' long association with Clearwater, their many tours in Ireland, and - on this weekend - the ideals that inspired Martin Luther King.

LEON REDBONE
Acoustic, Comedic. flapper-era ditties, ragtime, folk-jazz, etc
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Although Leon Redbone's iconic guise of white fedora, jacket and dark sunglasses has been thoroughly satirized, it's easy to overlook what a genuinely gifted artist he remains. His love affair with tunes from the turn-of-the-19th/20th-century, flapper-era radio ditties, depression-spawned ragtime and WWII folk-jazz is as contagious as a good giggle. Opportunities for this unlikely figure to impose himself on pop culture have been plentiful: his network debut on Saturday Night Live in 1976, making him a cult classic; the wise, animated snowman in Elf (his duet on Baby, It's Cold Outside served as the picture's theme song); TV title tunes to Mr Belvedere and Harry & The Hendersons; the homespun beer jingle This Bud's for You; the Getting To Know You voice on a series of Chevrolet ads; etc.

It's easy to get lost in his stage exploits, and overlook what a truly fine player he is -- fingerpicking with a ragtime bounce or jumping between chords with the grace of a card sharp.

The landscape that Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles have traversed over the past few years is plenty varied -- taking in scenes as diverse as the roadhouse melancholy to unashamedly guileless romanticism. While Borges readily acknowledges devouring songs from recordings made decades before she was born -- Wanda Jackson, Bob Wills and vintage Merle Haggard have all been in heavy rotation on her stereo -- she has always offset those influences with the music of the here-and-now.
