PHILIP HARPER studied at Hartt School of Music with Jackie McLean. At 18, he moved to New York where he started working and recording extensively, with musicians such as "Little" Jimmy Scott, Jimmy McGriff, Betty Carter, Etta Jones, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Bill Cosby and Cedar Walton.
Philip made several recordings with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and then formed a group with his brother, drummer Winard Harper. The Harper Brothers toured the world and made several successful albums for Polygram/Verve. Philip Harper has made over 50 recordings, both as leader – his solo albums "Soulful Sin" and "The Thirteenth Moon" on Muse Records - and as a sideman.
Philip has been living in both Europe and the USA, playing with the late Benny Golson & Cedar Walton, and has toured the globe as a member of the Mingus Big Band for more than 30 years. He is also a bandleader with the Philip Harper Quartet, Quintet and the PHAM Expression.
