The Compact is one of the most visible and highly regarded groups in New York’s Hudson Valley. Their signature sound grows from an intuitive, musical interplay and striking personality contrasts between long-time collaborators Erin Hobson (guitar) and multi-instrumentalist Steven W. Ross, whose main instrument is the bass.
The band is acclaimed for their spirited live shows, marked by bold musicianship and irresistible grooves, bringing audiences to their feet and keeping fans coming back for more. Hobson’s guitar playing is tinged with elements of Jazz, Folk and Rock, with phrasings that reveal a compelling musical personality. Ross’s bass-lines are rich and groovy, adding punch and texture, establishing the setting for each song’s foundation. Drummer Paul Rossman’s finesse and funky grooves provide a big pocket for The Compact’s unique sound.
Together these seemingly unlikely musical partners give each composition a unified and distinct feel, and each show becomes a deep study of sophisticated grooves, funky counterpoints, and adventurous songwriting.
The Compact’s original songs are musical narratives, drawn from multiple chapters of the American songbook. A combination of risk-taking, and free-spirited creativity that fuses pop hooks and earthy rhythms, with vocal friction between Hobson’s smooth croon and Ross’s thorny grit.
The Compact has released two new singles - "Disease" (2015) and "Make A Wish" (2016), alongside their three full length albums, "1@AX (one at a time)" (2014), "Fortune Cookie Philosophy" (2011)," and "Talk Radio" (2009). Tracks from these albums continue to play locally and nationally on terrestrial radio stations, steamed on Spotify, Pandora and Apple Radio, internet radio and Sirius-XM satellite. "It's A Wash" was voted in the Top 100 Songs of 2014 by listeners of Radio Woodstock, WDST 100.1FM.
