Would love to have some local violin/ viola students at this time of life. Drop me a line.
Born and raised in France, Olivier Manchon started his violin studies at the age of 4. After his classical studies in Paris at Conservatoire de Boulogne, he developed a passion for improvised music and jazz in particular. He won a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he was able to delve deep into the jazz world, while always staying close to his classical roots. Olivier has enjoyed many aspects of being a NYC musician, spanning genres and worlds. For 10 years he has been involved in the Broadway world, including the original Broadway production of "Spring Awakening" holding the chair of guitar and violin for nearly 3 years. He was also the concertmaster on "groundhog Day" the musical. Also playing "Next To Normal" (violin, keys) and "Ghost" (violin/viola), "Kinky Boots" and "Matilda".
Olivier is also an acclaimed composer and arranger and has written for people/ projects for Sufjan Stevens, Joan Osborne, Van Dyke Parks, "Clare and the Reasons", Stephane Wrembel (of woody allen films) and many more including his own chamber music group which is truly jazz/classical crossover "Orchestre de Chambre Miniature".
He has enjoyed composing, with his wife Clare, the scores for several PBS films and TV shows, including the ABC show "Black Box" starting Vanessa Redgrave, PBS's American Masters, the hit documentary "Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay", and many many more.
Olivier has also loved being a touring multi instrumentalist (viola, guitars, banjo, keyboards, bass, brass, musical saw, vocals, and much more) for such groups as Sufjan Stevens, She & Him, Belle & Sebastian, My Brightest Diamond, Clare and the Reasons and touring on viola with The Turtle Island String Quartet. He has played, recorded and toured extensively with both The Hot Club of San Francisco, and the Hot Club of New York as well as the legendary Blue Note recording artist Lionel Loueke.
