An Evening with Bruce Hornsby, Jessica Lynn- A Very Merry Country Christmas
Folk/Traditional
Paramount Hudson Valley Theater
1008 Brown St.
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Bruce Hornsby’s work displays a creative iconoclasm that’s been a constant in the artist’s two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on. When “The Way It Is’- the title track of his 1986 debut album- became one of the most popular songs on American radio. Despite his early mainstream successes, Hornsby has pursues a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Spike Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Don Henley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Justine Vernon, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, and Robbie Robertson. Hornsby’s performance will offer a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain.

An Evening of Song & Soul
with Marc Von Em
Blues, Funk, and Funk
Unison Arts & Learning Center
68 Mountain Rest Road
New Paltz, NY   See Map
Marc Von Em is a one man band of sorts, able to create an impressive array of music with just his voice and one faithful guitar. His chops are wide-ranging from delicate finger picking to raw, rambunctious strumming. Marc's guitar serves as more than one instrument as he uses it to create percussive beats and atmospheric sounds. His dynamic voice can go from smooth & soaring to smoky scatting. Marc's harmonica playing is equally impressive, and he sometimes uses it to accompany his blues influenced original songs. His soulful live performances showcase his original music, influenced by folk, funk and blues, with a few choice cover songs woven in. As one reviewer wrote: "If you haven't seen Marc Von Em perform live you're only cheating yourself."

The Performing Arts Center
735 Anderson Hill Road
Purchase, NY   See Map
This stereotype-smashing duo – Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste, a.k.a. Kev Marcus and Wil B. – blends classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and bluegrass music on violin and viola, accompanied by ace turntable whiz DJ SPS and drums, and backed by the entire Purchase Symphony Orchestra and a select group of the region's most talented high school musicians.

Named one of the hottest bands at SXSW in 2013, Black Violin was invited to perform at Bonnaroo and returned to SXSW this year to SRO crowds. With influences ranging from Shostakovich and Bach to Nas and Jay-Z, Black Violin breaks the rules, blending classical with modern to create a sound that no one has ever heard but everyone wants to feel, and showing that music can be as unrestrained as the minds that conceive it.

2017 Best Live Blues Album of the Year - "Live from Transylvania"

“Killer horns, greasy guitars, funky keys, and a rhythm section with a heart and soul the size of Braszil. This is a GREAT band that plays blues and everything else in between. Get ready for The Jimmys!" -Bryan Lee, Braille Blues Daddy

With Voegeli is an all-star rhythm section of Mauro Magellan (Georgia Satellites) drums; John Wartenweiler (The Crashers) bass; and the blues veteran Perry Weber (Hubert Sumlin) on guitar.

Their unique sound is capped off with Wisconsin’s best horn section featuring Pete Ross (Glenn Miller Orchestra) saxophone; Mike Boman (Youngblood Brass Band) trumpet; and Kevan Feyzi (Orquesta Latin Pride) trombone. These three honed their skills over the years playing with the original Funky Drummer himself, Clyde Stubblefield.

Reuben Wilson was one of few soul-jazz organists to emerge in the late '60s, and to be signed to Blue Note. He recorded five sessions for the label, which were later rediscovered by a new generation of soul-jazz fans, becoming collector's items within acid jazz and soul-jazz revivalist circles.

Like several of his peers, his late-'60s and '70s records, through sampling, became cornerstones in the newly emerging acid jazz and jazz-rap genres.

Eventually, samples of his records were included on hit albums by A Tribe Called Quest, Us3, Brand New Heavies, and Nas. In light of all this new attention, Wilson returned to performing, and toured with Guru's Jazzamatazz revue in 1995. In 1996, he signed to Hip Bop and released two albums, "Live at SOB's" and "Organ Donor". The following year, he recorded Organic Grooves with Dr. Lonnie Smith and Doug Carn.
