Wednesday 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm | 'Round Midnight: Celebrating Jazz in 1960s Europe | The Falcon 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
A multi-media celebration of the the lives and music of Dexter Gordon, and other American jazz musicians living in Europe in the 1960s. Gordon's sound was commonly characterized as being "large" and spacious and to play behind the beat. He was famous for humorously inserting musical quotes into his solos. One of his major influences was Lester Young. Gordon, in turn, was an early influence on John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Rollins and Coltrane then influenced Gordon's playing as he explored hard bop and modal playing during the 1960s. Dexter Gordon's soundtrack for the film, 'Round Midnight, entitled The Other Side of Round Midnight won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance, Soloist. Herbie Hancock won the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Score. This legendary soundtrack was released in two parts: Round Midnight and The Other Side of Round Midnight. When Chicago-born Abraham Dennis arrived in New York, from Switzerland - where he spent fifteen years fronting various soul bands - word got around that he was looking for a rhythm section, and that "This guy can really SING!". There was magic in engineer/percussionist Peter Martin's studio when Abraham, Kevin O'Toole, the band's former bassist Mike Colletti , Peter Martin and Tony Parker played together. There was a "natural groove" so the band became "The Groove", and their slogan became "Sweet Soul Music". That's what they're doing! Making people smile and dance throughout the Hudson Valley since 2011, with a blend of R&B, Latin and funk, to make you "get up offa' that thang". Daisycutter showcases Sara’s songwriting with a compelling blend of lyrical directness and instrumental firepower. "Songs We Like" is the first official Hazelrigg Brothers trio release. The album ties together George and Geoff’s multifaceted tastes and abilities in a way that’s exquisitely attuned, dynamically sensitive and sonically transparent. These are trio readings of ’70s/’80s pop treasures. A repertoire of widely varied and well- loved material by Men at Work, The Police, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Steely Dan, comes from a personal place, often inspired by the songs’ lyrics. “We’re not trying to play ‘jazz’ and pull these songs in,” says Geoff. “We want to play these songs.” Plans are afoot for a series of themed-album efforts to follow in the mold of "Songs We Like". Stay tuned for more inspired and inventive trio music from the Hazelrigg Brothers. “Creative and successful. A+” – JazzWeekly.com “Miss Gradenko” from SYNCHRONICITY by The Police: https://vimeo.com/133786807

All-She-Wrote is Gloria Jean, David LaPlante & Stephen Pounds. Regulars at the Woodstock-New Paltz Art&Crafts Fair, they play live music venues across the Northeast like Caffé Lena in Saratoga Springs & The Guthrie Center in Great Barrington, MA. Known for rich harmony vocals & clear acoustic guitar playing, they perform authentic renditions of classic 60s-70s folk with Gloria’s original songs between. They play guitars built by LaPlante, who crafted instruments for Noel Paul Stookey of Peter Paul & Mary. All three take turns at lead vocals, with LaPlante and Pounds playing intricately coordinated fingerpicking supported by Jean’s strong rhythm guitar, and the incomparable Larry Packer on fiddle & mandolin. They have 2 cds, the 2004 self-titled All-She-Wrote, and their 2017 release, Passing It On. Both earned a place on Folk-DJ Listserve’s “Top Albums” list. Featured are guest instrumental tracks by Rounder artists, The Lonely Heartstring Band, and Larry Packer on fiddle & mandolin.
