It's free and it involves several songwriters sharing their songs with a very grateful and attentive audience. This will be the series' 4th or 5th concert and my student tells me it's really great. So, go south on River Road just beyond the Rhinecliff Train Station and you'll find the library on the left. Donations are greatly appreciated. PRESS QUOTES
NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO: [Smither] taps his foot to keep the rhythm, much like the late blues legend John Lee Hooker. His finger-picked guitar lines are sleek, unhurried and insistent. And then there's the voice – equal parts gravel and molasses, Smither's singing sounds like a distillation of the folk and blues heroes he grew up listening to in New Orleans.
ROLLING STONE: Bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs, Smither's roots are as blue as they come. There is plenty of misty Louisiana and Lightnin' Hopkins in Smither's weathered singing and unhurried picking. So fine.
GUITAR MAGAZINE: His penchant for lyricism sometimes makes it easy to overlook his Delta-inspired guitar chops, which boast a strong rhythmic sense and a beautiful, fluid, fingerpicking style.
NEW YORK TIMES: Through the decades, Mr. Smither has taken the blues in a direction entirely his own: stoic existential ruminations sung in a pained, weathered moan and set to quietly virtuosic guitar. There was always unpretentious philosophy in the deep blues, and Mr. Smither has followed it toward his own quiet epiphanies.
WASHINGTON POST: (Smither)'s one of the finest interpreters of classic blues and contemporary roots music on the scene today.
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE: Smither continues to give ample proof that he's matured into one of roots music's most passionate, soulful songsmiths and interpreters. He has the perfect husky, country-music voice, and he keeps the tunes clipping with crisp acoustic picking.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Sitting all evening in a wooden chair, blue acoustic guitar cradled in his lap, feet miked to amplify him stamping out the beat, Smither coupled a firm grasp of nuance with understated, focused energy. Smither's quiet intensity made itself felt most of all in his dazzling guitar picking.
BOSTON GLOBE: (Smither) is among the finest acoustic guitarists anywhere in American music (Bonnie Raitt calls him "my Eric Clapton"), and his songs, while banked in the blues, are as modern as tomorrow's newspaper.

Alex Turnquist and friend
Acoustic
60 Main
60 Main St.
New Paltz, NY   See Map
Based on his debut album, Alexander Turnquist is that rarity, a young solo acoustic guitarist whose work bears no audible influence by John Fahey. Faint at the Loudest Hour has a faint raga feel, sometimes akin to solo albums by ex-Sun City Girls stalwart Sir Richard Bishop, and at times it descends into mere hypnotic prettiness in the manner of first-generation Windham Hill artists like Alex de Grassi and Michael Hedges. But Turnquist cleverly adds other textures and instruments to his playing, subtly enough to keep them from sounding intrusive, but with just enough presence to change the dynamics of what would be just another solo acoustic guitar record. Closing track "As the Sun Sets, We Think of Days to Come" is the highlight in this regard, with Turnquist's effortlessly flowing, cyclical guitar figures meshing perfectly with the repeated tumbling piano figure in the background.

"Ellis Paul is now a national folk star and to many the quintessential Boston songwriter: literate, provocative, urbanely romantic." - The Boston Globe. "The secret to Paul's rivetingly honest performing style is that he culls his stage presence and better-song banter from the same authentic place he draws his songs." - Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

Cold weather got you down? Well forget about it. Come out and enjoy the hot sounds of the Sugar Beats. This band always has a warm welcome at Gail's Place. At the end of the night they leave the crowd begging for more.."Encore; encore!!"...and deliver. If you enjoy the Garage, Rock, and Psychedelic band songs of the 1960's and early '70's era, you will love this band. They serve up some of the tastiest/hottest/coolest sounds with vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and drums. They even do some Surf instrumentals that will knock your socks off. So, if you were "Born to Be Wild", get you motor runnin' and head out to experience the Sugar Beats. Are they experienced? As the late, great Jimi Hendrix said, "Ah, let me prove it to ya." Don't let this opportunity pass you by. You owe it to yourself to be part of the Sugar Beats experience, if you haven't already. So if you keep asking yourself "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?", ask no more, be at Gail's Place.

Probably the largest working blues band in the world, ROOMFUL OF BLUES' trademark sound features lots of horns and a swinging, danceable style of blues and R&B spanning the years back to the '30s. Count Basie called Roomful of Blues "the hottest band I've ever heard" and Downbeat rates the band "in a class by itself." Reviewers nationwide have come up with their most heartfelt superlatives for this band that has been doing it for over 30 years now, and making themselves a legend in the process.

One of the best bands around! Their song selections are called up "rapid fire" style as needed to captivate an audience and to keep the event moving all night long...

They also reach just a bit deeper than most bands in their song selections.

As well as the "standards", they love to play songs that you do not hear everyday, but bring back some fantastic memories...

Once you hear them you'll want to come back for more!!

ENJOY DINNER WHILE LISTENING TO THE BAND. THE KITCHEN CLOSES AT 11:30.

BROOKE WAGGONER, JIM BIANCO, JEREMY FISHER
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
BROOKE WAGGONER takes a natural and logical approach to letting her music stand on its own and not forcing anything to be different for the sake of being different.

JIM BIANCO writes songs that are sometimes about love, sometimes about sex, sometimes about stalkers...or music...or folly...or the Devil. He has had some placements in movies (including Waitress) and on TV networks (Bravo and HBO). He has also had some great reviews in magazines like Billboard and the LA Weekly.

Post-millennial troubadour JEREMY FISHER's homemade video, Cigarette, has became a viral phenomenon of mega-proportions on YouTube ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=xGn0q1zoibw ), with 2+ million views. Fisher's new album, Goodbye Blue Monday, is a timeless burst of acoustic rock & roll that's brainy, hook-filled, playful and provocative, all at the same time.
